Natalie had no choice but to use herself as an excuse.
Ruby’s mental state was far too fragile for risks.

The incident with Moses had already been a heavy blow; if she went down there and saw blood and decay–and remembered everything Natalie had endured in the Summers family- Natalie truly feared her mother might relapse.
With the world outside already in chaos, what if someone took advantage of Ruby’s condition to hurt her?
Natalie couldn’t let anything happen to her mother.
Her only option was to use herself as a distraction; tears welled
up
in her eyes.
“Mom, could you really stand to see me relive all those horrible memories?”
The moment Ruby saw her daughter crying, she panicked.
“Natalie, don’t cry; please don’t cry. I won’t go down. I’ll listen to you; I’ll stay right here with you, okay?”
“Mom!”
Natalie threw her arms around Ruby, then, behind her back, motioned for Flynn and Yvonne to hurry downstairs.
Flynn thought Natalie was truly breaking down at the memory of that basement; guilt tugged at him. But when he caught her subtle look and hand gesture, he immediately understood.
Yvonne grabbed Flynn’s hand, and the two of them quickly slipped into the basement.
Meanwhile, Ruby clung to Natalie’s warm embrace, her chest tightening as if stuffed full of
cotton.
“Natalie,” she murmured, voice heavy, “no matter whether this has anything to do with Uncle Xenon or not, I promise you, I will treat Yvonne well. I can tell you don’t have many friends, but you care deeply about her. Anyone you want to protect, anyone you hold dear, I’ll love
too.”
Tears streamed down Ruby’s face.

For so long, she’d thought she was a forgotten orphan–but now she had a family, one that cherished her with everything they had. The warmth of it filled her chest, soft and steady.
“Mom, you said it yourself–you’ll treat Yvonne well. She’s had a hard life too. She grew up in an orphanage, bullied constantly, until Baron found her and another girl and took them in. They went through so much together before things finally got better. And besides, she’s Uncle Xenon’s daughter. Whatever mistakes he made in the past, at least his bloodline lives on through her. When Alden recovers, the two of them can carry on his legacy.”
Natalie guided Ruby to a nearby chair and helped her sit down.
Looking at the calm warmth in her daughter’s eyes, Ruby finally understood–Natalie truly didn’t resent Xenon and his wife.
“Natalie,” Ruby whispered, “after everything you’ve been through, don’t you hate me? If I hadn’t been so careless, you never would’ve been switched at birth. If my depression hadn’t relapsed, your father wouldn’t have buried that child so hastily, and you wouldn’t have suffered all those years. You should hate us.”
Natalie gently patted the back of her mother’s hand, knowing this guilt had haunted her for years. “Mom, people are connected by fate. You and I were meant to find each other again, no matter what happened. You and Dad loved me deeply–why would I ever hate you for that? Don’t overthink it. Honestly, the Summers family didn’t treat me as badly as you imagine. They weren’t affectionate, but until I turned eighteen, they provided what they should have. It wasn’t as miserable as you think.”
“But they didn’t treat you kindly either.”
“It doesn’t matter anymore. As long as you treat me well from now on, that’s enough. So, Mom, you need to take care of yourself—I’m counting on you to help me look after the kids. Susie and Sean are sweet, but they still need someone around.”
At the mention of her children, something struck Natalie.
“Wait, mom–since you and Flynn came out here, where are the kids? Is someone watching
them?”
Ruby froze, her heart skipping a beat. The kids?
She hadn’t even thought about whether they were home.
Seeing her mother’s blank expression, Natalie’s heart sank.
