Natalie felt her backbone return. She let go of Yvonne and Flynn and ran toward Baron as if propelled by wings. Baron had never seen Natalie greet him like this before; he paused for a moment, startled. The next instant she was in front of him, the faint perfume he knew flooding his senses, and she launched herself into his arms.
The warmth of her body and the subtle press of her curves hit Baron’s nerves; he swallowed and felt something stir behind his eyes. “You’re a little intense–this is almost too much,” he teased.
Natalie punched him lightly, half–playful, half–scolding. “Where did you go? Do you know how worried I was? Why did you go after him? That man had a sniper rifle–there was a gun! Do you really think you’re invincible, that you’re some kind of superhero?”
She shivered just thinking about it. She hadn’t said anything earlier to avoid alarming the others, but now that Baron was whole and standing there, she couldn’t hold it in any longer. Her eyes were red, and her body trembled.
“Baron, don’t you know you’re hurt? Don’t you know you’re my husband? The father of my children? You charged out like a fool–did you ever think about us? I just accepted you, we just started a family, you idiot. If you make me a widow, I will drag you to hell and back! Do you hear me?”

Natalie was genuinely terrified. The corpses at the old house and the forces behind all this made her realize the danger was far bigger than she’d imagined. She’d always known the world had a dark side, but she’d never understood how vast that darkness could be. Even being cheated and nearly burned alive by Sharon had been blunt, visible cruelty. The kidnapping of Moses and herself was different–shadowy, organized, and far more dangerous. The more she recognized the risk, the more she panicked at the thought of Baron getting hurt.
Baron stood stunned. He had never seen Natalie break down like this. Even during the Sharon incident, she had been quiet and controlled–an internal volcano, pressed down. Now she was raw and open, directly displaying her fear and fury. It tore at him. He’d devoted himself to protecting Natalie, never imagining he himself could be the source of her greatest fear.
Ignoring whether his wounds might reopen, Baron wrapped Natalie in his arms and held her
