Chapter 153 Running From Desire

SERAPHINA

Of all times, my heat came at the worst possible moment when before me stood the Alpha who had always watched me as though I were prey, something sinful and delicious meant only for him. His gaze devoured me, his wolf flashing through his eyes, hungry and wild, feasting upon the sight of the damp shirt clinging to my curves, outlining the swell of my breasts and the dip of my waist.

Suddenly, he lowered himself in front of me, so close I could breathe in his intoxicating scent, sharp and undeniably male. His voice came in a low, husky murmur, You smell so sweet, Seraphina. His hand brushed against my flushed cheek, the touch scorching. “So sweet I could eat you alive.”

Before I could even draw a breath, his lips claimed mine. I gasped, my heart stuttering beneath the weight of his dangerous words, his kiss soft yet consuming. When a wolf said he wanted to eat you, it carried a meaning far deeper than mortal tongues could understand, and the way his fingers slid into my hair, pulling me closer as his mouth deepened against mine, was all the proof I needed.

His nearness unraveled me and I found myself kissing him back. I wanted it. I wanted him. My limbs weakened, my blood burned, and another wave of heat rolled through me like molten fire. The need was unbearable, an ache so fierce it felt like madness, and my wolf cried out inside me, clawing for him, screaming for the only man who could ease this torment. But just as he slid his hand in my shirt, my senses knocked back.

I tore myself away from his kiss, alarm jolting through me. In the next breath, I realized Phina was no longer under control. She was releasing pheromones unwittingly, helplessly drawing his wolf closer, pulling him to me in the way a female begged for her man.

The realization shattered me.

SeraphinaHis voice was ragged, his eyes burning with hunger, wild with need. He leaned in, lips parting, ready to claim me again. Panic surged, and I jerked back, sliding away before his mouth could capture mine once more. My heat was playing with his wolf. He did not know what he was doing. I saw many man who regretted after they had sex with a shewolf in heat and then blamed those women for their heat. Heat was bound to cloud the wolves judgement and all they could feel was lust.

But more than him, it had been breaking me. Every part of him was making my heat unbearable, his nearness, his intoxicating, masculine scent, the raw

dominance that clung to him like a second skin. I had to escape. I had to get away before his control slipped…before the worst mistake possible was committed, one that could never be undone.

With a desperate cry caused by my heat, I bolted. Not toward the cliff that led back to the Academy’s forest, but toward the river.

GRRRhis furious growl over my escape sent shivers down to spin. But I didn’t dare look back. Stopping meant getting caught and getting caught meant….

That thought alone was a nightmare.

My body screamed with pain, bones aching as if they were twisting apart, but fear outweighed everything, fear of Ronan chasing me, of the Alpha who could devour me whole. I could feel him already moving. More like running. He was too powerful, too instinctdriven, too dangerous to face at this moment.

I hurled myself into the river, cold water swallowing me as I kicked and swam with every shred of strength I had left. By the time I clawed my way to the other side, a wild, unfamiliar forest loomed before me. Inside, Phina surged, clawing her way forward, her moans of need filling my head.

Ahhh!I screamed, tearing at my clothes with trembling hands, heat searing every inch of me. I could barely contain her, barely hold her back. The moment the last piece of fabric hit the ground, she snapped free.

Phina burst forth as I shifted, my world blurring as my body melted into fur and power. A white wolf tore into the forest, desperate and unrestrained, running from the only male who could break me.

My vision blurred, my mind fogged with stress and pain as I tore myself away from Ronan. The icy river water masked my scent for a fleeting moment, but my heat betraying me with every wave, would soon give me away. If he caught it again, he would find me. If I couldn’t conceal my scent, I had to find another way to protect myself.

Still this forest was unfamiliar. My thoughts refused to align, scattered as my body fought against me,

The wind howled around me, fierce and wild, and thunder cracked across the darkening sky. I tilted my head up just as a raindrop splashed against my heated skin. Relief surged through me. Rain. The storm would shroud the scent of my heat. And it did. The heavens opened, sheets of rain pouring down, cloaking me in their mercy.

Still, I could not run forever. My body faltered, legs buckling as exhaustion dragged me down. I collapsed onto the sodden ground, gasping, every breath ragged and shallow.

Pain scorched through me, unbearable and unrelenting. I writhed against the earth, moaning helplessly as my body succumbed to the torment of heat. Since the moment I first shifted at sixteen, I had endured these cycles. Painful, yes, as it always was for unmated, unmarked shewolves. But this– this was unlike anything I had ever known. My entire body was aflame, sweat clinging to my trembling limbs, each breath like fire clawing at my chest. Why? Why it was so different? Could he be the reason?

In the past, Lily had always been there, pressing a vial of medicine into my hand to shorten the suffering, to steady me through the storm in a single day. Now, without her, without help, I had no idea how long this agony would last. A part of me knew that if I didn’t return to the Academy soon, I could be expelled. The thought pierced through the haze for only a second before it, too, was consumed by the overwhelming inferno ravaging me.

Ahhh-My scream ripped free, muffled only when I bit down hard against it, chest arching as another wave tore through me.

The rain lashed harder, cool droplets striking my fevered skin like lashes, stinging instead of soothing. I twisted crying out, desperate for release, for relief, anything to ease the torment.

Until-

A shadow fell over me.
