“Mom, what’s going on?”

Ruby rushed out of her room the second she heard the noise in the apartment. She found Tina frantically throwing on a coat, clearly getting ready to leave.

“Your dad’s been taken by the police.”

Ruby’s face drained of color. “What? How did this happen so fast?”

“There’s got to be someone working against us. I’m heading to the office. You stay on top of the media—whatever happens, don’t let this get out.”

Ruby nodded, already pulling out her phone.

Tina, still shaken, showed up at the police station with a lawyer by her side. She was usually flawless in front of the cameras, but tonight she looked nothing like her polished self—hair a mess, clothes thrown on in a hurry.

Inside the police station, Tina demanded, “Why did you arrest my husband?”

“There are things we need his cooperation for during our investigation,” one of the officers replied.

“Couldn’t you have brought him in tomorrow? Did you really have to drag him out in the middle of the night?”

“It was an urgent situation. Mr. Martin was heading to the airport. We were worried he might run.”

Tina’s voice shook with anger. “You expect me to just accept that you were ‘worried’?”

Brandon, the officer in charge, leaned back in his chair, his face unreadable. He made it clear he wasn’t going to engage with her outrage.

The lawyer next to Tina squeezed her hand, then turned to Brandon. “Then maybe you should tell us what exactly my client is accused of.”

Brandon just said, “No comment.”

“You’re a lawyer. You know what it means to have an arrest warrant.”
