A Vow of Deception, A Vow of Revenge novel Chapter 108

Elvis said nothing, but the darkness in his eyes held no hint of denial.

"I should have known," Jonah's voice shook violently. "Someone like you, settling for a business marriage? Taking time out of your life for a fiancée you barely know, flying to another city just for her? Elvis, when did you start caring about her?"

"That's none of your concern." Elvis tapped his fingers twice on the armrest, gaze drifting toward the heavy night beyond the tall windows. His voice was utterly flat. "All you need to know is that Miss Thorne is my fiancée. She's going to be your sister-in-law."

"Is that supposed to be a warning?" Jonah glared at him.

A warning not to go near Winona again?

"As long as you understand." Elvis rose to his feet, his chilly gaze sweeping over Jonah. "We're brothers, Jonah, but that doesn't mean my patience is endless. Don't make me repeat myself."

With that, he turned and walked away.

Jonah stared at his tall, rigid figure, then suddenly let out a short, bitter laugh. "You saw that poster, didn't you?"

Elvis paused at the door, fingers resting on the cold handle. He didn't look back.

Outside, city lights fractured the rain into shimmering ribbons, casting the darkness in his eyes even deeper.

"The preview poster for my art show." Jonah's voice followed him, raspy from alcohol and stubborn to the point of desperation. "You saw it while you were abroad, didn't you?"

"Jonah, did you listen to a single word I just said?"

Jonah laughed, the sound unhinged. "So you do know what I plan to do. If I want, my gallery can be full of her face. You know how much influence I have—how many people will obsess over her identity? How many will speculate about my relationship with her? When that happens, how are the Rogers and Thorne families going to announce your engagement?"

Elvis finally turned. His glare was sharp as a blade, cutting straight to Jonah's bloodshot eyes.

"And you think that will work?"

"In this world, public opinion is everything!" Jonah's voice was hoarse, desperate. "If I can stop your engagement—"

"And then what?" Elvis's tone was icy.

Jonah was suddenly at a loss. His throat tightened.
