He was here to pick her up.
Elvis walked straight over to them, offering Winona a warm smile before greeting Veronica politely.
"Miss Bellamy."
Even though he was clearly making an effort to be friendly, probably because she was Winona's close friend, Elvis's commanding presence still made Veronica's nerves tingle.
"Good evening, Mr. Rogers! Well, Nona, since Mr. Rogers is here to pick you up, I'll get going now."
"Veronica…"
"Miss Bellamy, let us give you a ride home," Elvis offered.
The word "us" sent a jolt through Winona's heart.
Veronica quickly waved her hands. "No need, really—my driver's waiting for me just over there!"
Before either Elvis or Winona could say anything else, she scurried off.
The last thing she wanted was to play third wheel.
She already felt guilty for the mix-up earlier, when she'd misunderstood and led Winona to the wrong engagement partner. The thought of intruding on their alone time made her even more anxious to disappear.
Watching Veronica's rabbit-like retreat, Winona couldn't help but laugh softly.
"Miss Bellamy is a wonderful person," Elvis said, turning to Winona with a gentle smile in his eyes.
Winona nodded. "We grew up together. She's always looked out for me."
"Let's get in the car."
They walked side by side toward the parking lot, Winona speaking in a low voice, "I didn't expect you'd come pick me up."
They were so close now—by the time she finished her sentence, they were already by the car.
Elvis reached out to open the door for her, turning to meet her gaze, his voice warm and sincere. "Picking up my fiancée—that's what a man should do."
As his words settled in the air, Winona's fingers trembled ever so slightly.
Maybe it was the softness of the night breeze, but in that moment her heart melted.
