"Sweetheart, you're still pregnant," Tyson coaxed her gently. "This kind of private party isn't like Mr. Dalton's birthday dinner."
A sixtieth birthday party would be formal and proper—no one would even think about lighting up a cigarette.
But a private gathering of trust fund kids? There'd be drinking, smoking, all kinds of rowdy fun—not exactly the place to bring a pregnant woman.
"You're right." Celia didn't want to risk anything happening to the baby, either.
She wrapped her arms around his neck, her voice soft and pleading. "Then promise me you'll come home early, okay? I can't sleep when you're not here."
"I promise." Tyson leaned down and pressed a kiss to her lips, murmured a few more words to calm her, and finally got up to leave.
His friend had sent the address—a villa on the outskirts of town, surrounded by trees and gardens, outfitted with every amenity you could imagine. The whole place was designed for guys like them to hang out and have a good time.
The staff worked year-round and were paid handsomely for their trouble. On top of their regular salaries, the tips alone could probably buy you an apartment on the south side of the city.
Tyson pulled up in front of the villa just as his friend came out to greet him.
"There you are, Mr. Goodwin! Thought you'd never show." His friend, Jared Drake, was the quintessential rich kid—Tyson had met him back in their college days in Seastone City, and they'd kept in touch over the years.
"Sorry, something came up at home. I got held up."
Jared shot him a knowing look. "Let me guess—girlfriend trouble?" He waggled his eyebrows. "Why didn't you bring her along?"
By "her," Jared meant Winona.
Tyson knew exactly what he was getting at but just brushed off the question with a vague reply. He tossed his keys to the valet and followed Jared inside.
On the first floor, a handful of guys were chatting and laughing, while a few pretty servers in sleek uniforms poured drinks at a side table.
As Tyson walked in, the crowd paused and turned to greet him.
