"Seems Mr. Rogers has quite the interest in my personal affairs." Tyson put a deliberate emphasis on "personal affairs," making it perfectly clear he was mocking Elvis for meddling where he didn't belong.
Elvis's expression didn't change. "Personal affairs? I wouldn't go that far."
"Geez, what's going on here?"
The tension in the room was suffocating until Jeremiah stepped in, trying to smooth things over. He glanced from Elvis to Tyson, a broad smile on his face. "Come on, guys, we're here to have fun. Let's not get bogged down in all this family drama, huh? Boring."
It was obvious Elvis had no intention of warming up to Tyson. Jeremiah caught on and didn't bother trying to talk to Tyson anymore. Instead, he nudged Elvis with his elbow. "How about a game of pool? You in?"
"No." Elvis didn't even look up, tossing out the word before returning to whatever conversation he was having on his phone.
He clearly had no intention of engaging with Tyson any further.
The others in the room picked up where they'd left off, getting loud again. But beneath the surface, Tyson could feel their eyes flicking toward him, sizing him up when they thought he wasn't looking.
Anyone who might have considered striking up a conversation with Tyson had already abandoned the idea.
Who would risk pissing off Elvis Rogers just to cozy up to Tyson? Not worth it.
Tyson stood alone under the crystal chandelier, its fractured light scattering across his shoulders like a thousand watchful eyes.
Jared felt a pang of guilt. After all, he was the one who'd invited Tyson tonight. Leaving him stranded now would be downright heartless.
So he took a deep breath, squared his shoulders, and walked over to pull Tyson aside.
"Tyson… you never mentioned you had beef with Mr. Rogers." Jared looked at him, clearly conflicted. "What happened between you two?"
"I didn't do anything." Tyson's voice was cold and hard. "He's the one picking fights."
