A Vow of Deception, A Vow of Revenge novel Chapter 177

Many people attending the business seminar were eager to invite Elvis and Winona out for dinner, but neither of them accepted any of the offers.

Instead, after booking a restaurant, they simply brought Jeremiah along.

Jeremiah seemed to have completely forgotten about his earlier grudge—Elvis refusing to give him a ride on his private jet. The moment he spotted the two of them, he grinned warmly and greeted Winona with genuine enthusiasm.

They hadn't even gotten their food yet when Jeremiah, never one to let a silence linger, launched into a string of amusing stories with Winona. After a while, he turned to Elvis. "Did you catch Jackson's talk today? He was pretty impressive!"

Elvis, who had indeed been present, simply nodded. "Yeah."

"I heard the organizers asked you to give a talk too. Why didn't you agree? You just let that guy steal the spotlight."

"Didn't feel like it," Elvis replied, perfectly deadpan.

Something about the way he said it made Winona nearly lose her composure. She ducked her head in an attempt to hide her smile, but her shoulders shook with barely contained laughter.

Jeremiah noticed immediately and asked, half teasing, "Is it really that funny, how lazy he is?"

Winona looked up, instantly composed. "Not at all. A little laziness is a good thing."

Jeremiah rolled his eyes. "Unbelievable. Couples are the worst!"

Elvis glanced at Winona with a faint smile, just as she turned to look at him. Their eyes met, and for a moment, the rest of the world faded away.

Jeremiah cleared his throat loudly. "Ahem! Hey, you two, don't forget I'm sitting right here!"

Both quickly looked away. Winona picked up her glass of juice, taking a sip as Jeremiah went on, "You know, I bet the Quincy family is feeling a little anxious right about now."

He didn't elaborate, but Winona understood his meaning.

Now that the Thorne and Rogers families had formed an alliance through marriage, and Jeremiah from the Whitlock family was close to Elvis, it seemed the Quincy family alone was being left out among the city's four great houses.
