Winona spoke softly. "It's never too late to start over."
Sue wasn't crying anymore. She just stared blankly at the carpet beneath her feet, her eyes dull and lifeless.
"These three years with him… Sure, we had our arguments, but I always thought, well, every married couple has their ups and downs." Sue's voice trembled. "But I never imagined that, for the sake of his own interests, he'd just toss me aside—hand me over to some disgusting old creep."
She'd never once considered that the man she loved could do something so unforgivable.
Thank God Winona had been here tonight.
"I just want to go home," Sue whispered. "I miss my mom and dad, and my sister."
She looked up at Winona, desperation in her voice. "Winona, can I go back with you and your family?"
"Of course you can," Winona replied. "If that's what you want, I'll make the arrangements."
"Thank you…"
Sue's tense shoulders eased a little. She knew what she needed most right now was to get a divorce, but she just couldn't think that far ahead—she only wanted to go home, to be with her family.
She couldn't bear the thought of returning to the reception, or to the house she shared with Eric. Winona quickly arranged for someone to drive Sue away, found her a quiet hotel room, and insisted she get some real rest.
When the banquet ended and the guests began to drift out, Winona and Elvis left the hall together and headed toward the parking lot. Just as they reached the car, a shout came from behind: "President Thorne!"
Winona turned with a frosty glare, only to see Eric—Sue's husband—hurrying toward her.
He faltered, intimidated by the icy look in her eyes, but forced himself to speak. "Where's my wife? I… I should take her home."
"Sue doesn't want to see you," Winona said coldly.
