At that moment, Mr. Ford couldn't care less about the minor chaos in front of him—his only focus was on Winona. He anxiously asked about her condition. "Where are you hurt? What did the doctor say?"
After all, he'd watched this girl grow up. The news that she was in the hospital had put his heart in his throat.
"I hit the back of my head on the corner of a cabinet," Winona replied. "The doctor said it's just a mild concussion. Nothing serious."
Mr. Ford let out a breath he didn't know he was holding. "Thank goodness."
He turned to Elvis and Tyson, suspicion flickering in his eyes. But Mr. Ford was a sharp man and had already pieced together the rough outline of what happened.
Elvis, still supporting Winona, helped her sit up properly. "Don't get up so quickly next time," he reminded her.
"I know," Winona said quietly, lowering her gaze. "Thank you, Mr. Rogers."
Elvis straightened, his icy stare fixed on Tyson. "How did Miss Thorne end up with a concussion?"
Tyson's heart skipped, but he quickly collected himself. Keeping his voice even, he replied, "It was just an accident. Nona tripped and fell."
Winona let out a cold laugh. "Tyson, do you ever bother rehearsing your lies?"
"Nona!" Tyson's brow furrowed. Couldn't she play along with him, just this once, in front of outsiders? She was getting more and more impossible.
"And what exactly are you calling Nona for?" Mr. Ford's expression hardened. "Trying to get her to cover for you?"
"And who are you supposed to be?" Tyson looked him up and down.
Mr. Ford was new to Seastone City this year, and since the Thorne family's branch didn't deal much with Goodwin Enterprises, Tyson had never met him.
"I'm Nona's uncle," Mr. Ford declared, full of the authority of an elder. "And I want to know exactly how she ended up with a concussion."
