Winona instinctively turned to look at him, surprised.
It wasn't that she was shocked Elvis had heard about the welcome party—after all, even Jonah knew about it, and Veronica had made quite the spectacle organizing everything. It wasn't strange that Elvis would have caught wind of it too.
What puzzled her was why he was bringing it up with her now.
"It was pretty fun," she replied.
Elvis fell silent again.
The awkwardness in the car was suffocating, so Winona took the initiative. "Mr. Rogers, is there… something you wanted to talk about?"
She'd almost asked if something was bothering him, but decided to rephrase at the last second.
Elvis didn't answer right away. After a pause, he finally spoke, his voice low and a little distant. "You invited Jonah, but you didn't invite me."
Winona's words caught in her throat. She scrambled for an explanation. "Mr. Rogers, you came with friends."
But as soon as she said it, she knew it sounded off.
What was she even saying?
Jonah was her fiancé, after all. Even if she did invite him, wasn't that only natural?
Elvis's comment was strange—did he think that after everything they'd been through together in Seastone City, they were friends now, and so she should have invited him?
But Elvis never struck her as someone who cared about these things.
"I'm sorry, Mr. Rogers," Winona said awkwardly. "I just thought you'd be busy, and I didn't want to trouble you."
Her flimsy excuse almost made Elvis laugh out loud.
Little liar.
Wasn't she the one who promised she'd get along with her fiancé? Yet ever since she got back to the Capital, she hadn't even sent him a message, let alone invited him to the party.
And that picture of Winona and Jonah standing together just now—he couldn't help but find it irritating.
That kid Jonah, could it be…?
