Chapter 23 Who Is She?

The very air seemed to grow colder the moment he stepped into the elevator.

When his gaze wasn’t fixed on anyone, he resembled a serene, detached figure, but when he looked at someone, it felt dangerous and unnerving. “Explain.”

Patrick Pennington, the director, mopped his brow. “Mr. Winthrop, rest assured, Dr. Kendrick is an expert in this field. With her treating Sir Caldwell, there will certainly be no problem!”

Who else could inspire such fear in so many important figures but Adrian, the head of the Winthrop family?

Adrian slowly turned the rosary beads on his wrist, raising an eyebrow slightly. “The information I received suggests otherwise.”

“Mr. Winthrop, w–we truly aren’t lying to you,” the deputy director stammered. “We wouldn’t dare neglect Sir Caldwell’s condition. We value our positions! That’s the Caldwell family!”

Adrian said nothing more, simply standing tall and composed as the elevator ascended to the sixth floor.

His silent intensity was more intimidating than any outburst.

Patrick’s knees began to feel weak.

When the elevator arrived, Adrian motioned for them to exit first.

They understood he wished to remain inconspicuous.

But he couldn’t understand why Rosalie was standing in the observation room.

Adrian stopped walking, his gaze falling on the lead physician inside the emergency room who was finishing up with her specialized tools. His voice was icy. “I was told Dr. Kendrick was leading the procedure. Who is that?”

The figure by the bed wore a medical mask and cap. Her movements were swift, precise, and profoundly professional. Yet, the youthfulness was evident in her eyes.

“Sh–she…..” The deputy director wiped his sweat, terrified into incoherence.

Patrick snapped. He pulled Rosalie from the observation room, his voice trembling. “Dr Kendrick, why are you out here? Why is a young woman treating the patient?!”

Seeing the director, Rosalie initially looked pleased, then said, “Mr. Pennington, I was just about to report this. Dr. Pennington has overstepped! The family hasn’t signed the consent forms, and he let an unqualified person perform a procedure!”

The director didn’t want to hear excuses. Knowing Adrian was watching, he roared, “I asked why you weren’t in that room!”

“The family didn’t sign! Besides, a common case like this doesn’t require my personal attention,” Rosalie said dismissively, her expression all but stating the patient was too poor and unimportant for her skills.

Patrick was livid, overwhelmed with panic. “A common case? You think he’s a common case? Rosalie, have you lost your mind?! That is Sir Caldwell! Of the Caldwell family in Brookford!”

She understood each word individually, but together they hit her like a physical blow. Dizziness washed over her, and she collapsed onto the floor.

“That’s impossible… It can’t be…”

Patrick waved his arm in fury. “It is possible! You! You had a chance to aid a figure of immense importance, and you threw it away!”

Hearing this, Rosalie was consumed by bitter regret.

She looked toward the emergency room.

She had handed this golden opportunity to some nobody on a silver platter.

If she had been the one to save Antonio, then…

The thought overwhelmed her. She suffered a sudden stroke and lay paralyzed on the ground.

Patrick wanted her gone. He gestured for nurses to carry her away.
