Chapter 39 She Really is Foor

Chapter 39 She Really Is Poor

Annelise had no idea that Jonathon, after declaring their newfound friendship, had already spread the tale of her sup- posed destitution far and wide.

She raised an eyebrow at Adrian, puzzled. “I haven’t treated you yet. What’s there to charge?”

“The medicinal candy from yesterday,” Adrian said, gesturing to his assistant, Blaine.

Blaine, who’d been itching to ask when Annelise would treat Adrian, stepped forward, holding out a sleek, gold-cm- bossed black card. “Dr. Caldwell, please take this.”

“I’ll bill you once I’ve actually treated him,” Annelise said, tucking her medical kit away.

Blaine, thinking she was about to leave, flushed with alarm. “Dr. Caldwell, what are you doing?”

“Packing up,” she said, glancing at him with confusion. “What’s the problem?”

Blaine’s face reddened further. “You haven’t treated Mr. Winthrop yet!”

“Him?” Annelise stepped over to Adrian. “You in a hurry?”

Adrian’s voice was smooth, almost melodic. “No rush. Whenever you’re ready.”

Annelise considered for a moment, then said, “Alright, come with me.”

Blaine and Freddy exchanged bewildered glances, unsure where this was headed.

Adrian, however, simply nodded. “Fine.”

Annelise turned to bid Antonio farewell.

Antonio tried to follow, but Waylon, his assistant, held him back.

“Sir Caldwell, you’re still recovering. Dr. Caldwell said you need rest.”

Antonio rose with the help of his cane, moving to the window to watch the graceful young woman below. “If Ana were here, she’d be about her age, wouldn’t she?”

“Sir Caldwell, we’ll find Ms. Ana,” Waylon said, bowing his head. “We’re in Criford now. It’s only a matter of time.”

Antonio’s eyes flashed with a suppressed intensity. “Send more people to Elmbrook County. Make it loud. Offer re- wards for any leads. I want to know what went wrong.”

“Yes, sir,” Waylon replied, taking the order.

Outside, a breeze rustled the treetops.

The air had grown cooler, autumn settling in.

Antonio’s team led them to Willow Lane.

Freddy, a veteran at the hospital, had never noticed such a dilapidated alley so close by.

“Mr. Winthrop, watch your step. The road’s uneven,” Blaine said, unable to hold back. He raised and lowered his um- brella nervously.

Adrian had never walked a path like this. His custom leather shoes looked absurdly out of place on the rough cobble-

stones.

Yet his demeanor remained poised, his elegance unshaken, as if the grim surroundings couldn’t touch him.

“Here we are,” Annelise said, stopping.

Adrian, tall and strikingly handsome, stood bathed in the alley’s soft sunlight, like a figure stepped out of a painting.

“Annie, is this a friend of yours?”

Madge, the neighbor, called out, splashing water from a bucket, her eyes wide with curiosity.

“They don’t look like they’re from around here.”

Blaine stepped forward, blocking her view with a protective stance.

Madge flinched. “Goodness! That one’s got a mean look…”
