Chapter 40 Annelise’s Humble Roots

The interior of the clinic was far more respectable than its shabby exterior suggested.

Blaine had initially worried that the place would be too grimy for Adrian to receive treatment here.

But as he stepped inside, he found the space spotlessly clean, exuding the orderly charm of a proper massage parlor.

A wooden medicine cabinet stood proudly in the center, reminiscent of the aged but dignified estates in Brookford. Though worn, the clinic radiated a distinct sense of cleanliness and care unique to healing spaces.

Adrian surveyed the room with a calm, detached air, his fingers idly twirling the rosary beads on his wrist. His gaze soon settled on a painting hanging on the wall.

Annelise noticed his interest and stepped closer. “It’s a fake.”

“You think I’d mistake it for the real thing?” Adrian arched an eyebrow, a playful lilt in his voice.

Annelise’s eyes sparkled with amusement. “You never know.”

Adrian said nothing more, but his gaze lingered on the painting.

The artwork depicted a handsome man resting against a tree in a serene forest, rendered with such vivid, delicate brushstrokes that it seemed to breathe with life.

Had Adrian not known the original had been snapped up by a foreign collector, he might’ve been fooled into thinking this was the genuine piece.

Freddy, ever curious, piped up. “Running a foot massage shop like this, Dr. Caldwell, you’ve got some bold ideas!”

“It’s a clinic,” Annelise corrected gently, her tone even.

Freddy quickly backtracked. “Right, this clinic’s got character!”

“Annie, is that you?” Isabella’s voice called out as she emerged from the back room, leaning on her cane. She froze for a moment at the sight of the group but quickly recovered, her face breaking into a warm, welcoming smile. “Are these all your friends, Annie?”

Blaine, quick to read the room, jumped in. “Yes, friends!”

Isabella nodded, clearly pleased, her eyes settling on Adrian. “And this gentleman?”

“He…” Annelise began, but Adrian cut in with a nod. “I’m her friend too.”

“Annie, you could’ve given me a heads-up that your friends were coming!” Isabella said, casting a mock-reproachful glance at her granddaughter. “I would’ve told Lenny to pick up extra groceries so we could whip up something special for everyone.”

Annelise wheeled over a chair and helped Isabella settle into it. “Grandma, they’re not staying for a meal. This friend of mine isn’t feeling well, so I brought him here for an herbal sauna.”

Isabella, with her years of medical experience, took one look at Adrian’s pallor and knew something was off. “Annie, is he just unwell?”

“Just a bit under the weather,” Annelise said with a reassuring smile. “His stomach’s acting up, digestion issues. A massage will do the trick. Don’t worry, I won’t overdo it.”

Isabella patted her hand gently. “You’d better remember what I taught you.”

“I do,” Annelise said, her smile soft. “Small ailments can be treated with massage. If it’s serious, we can’t use massage or even herbs. Those cases belong to the big hospital across the street. Our little clinic doesn’t handle major illnesses.”

Her memories of the past were hazy, but one thing stood out.

When she had just woken up, Gloria had told her to steer clear of the clinic because Isabella had once caused a patien- t’s death.
