Chapter 42 Take off Your Clothes
“Dr. Pennington,” Annelise called softly, her voice measured and deliberate.
Freddy snapped to attention, standing ramrod straight. “Right here.”
“Can you boil water and identify herbs?” Annelise nodded toward the medicine cabinet.
Freddy bobbed his head eagerly. “I can, though I’m a bit slow at it.”
“Grab some dates, poria, and roasted atractylodes. Keep them ready,” Annelise instructed, tilting her head. “If some- one comes in for a massage, come find me.”
Freddy nearly chuckled. Annelise was treating him, a lead surgeon, like a receptionist.
Her eyes twinkled with amusement. “Not up for it?”
“Are you kidding? It’s my honor,” Freddy said, rolling up his sleeves.
He’d come to learn from her, so playing the receptionist was a small price to pay.
With everything arranged, Annelise led Adrian into the back room. The space was tidy and serene, with a soft treat- ment couch at its center. The air was infused with the soothing scent of herbs, enveloping them the moment they stepped inside.
The couch was connected to something beneath.
Adrian peered closer and noticed a small furnace, likely designed to warm the herbs layered under a delicate purple gauze, giving the setup a professional, almost ritualistic air.
“Take off your clothes,” Annelise said, opening her medical kit. She casually plucked a hairpin from her bag and twisted her waist-length hair into a loose bun. “Lie down on the couch.”
Blaine, who’d just walked in with a wooden bucket, froze at her words.
His mind screamed, “What?
“This girl is asking Mr. Winthrop to strip and lie on a heated couch in a place like this? Impossible!”
Since the age of four, Adrian had never let anyone touch him. He handled everything himself, keeping servants at ar- m’s length. Even abroad, he never stayed in hotels and lived exclusively in family-owned estates.
Yet here was this doctor, ordering him to undress and lie down in a clinic.
Blaine’s instincts bristled with resistance. This was reckless. Annelise might not only fail to treat Adrian but could make him worse. If that happened, Blaine would be in hot water.

Annelise, oblivious to his concerns, continued preparing her herbal concoction.
Adrian, standing by the couch, raised an eyebrow, his gaze darkening slightly. “You’re sure you want me to undress here?”
Annelise adjusted the furnace’s heat, her smile radiant. “This is the best place for your treatment. The gauze on the couch is sterilized and perfectly clean.”
Adrian didn’t move, his eyes fixed on her, assessing.
“No need to be shy,” Annelise said, dipping her hands into the herbal broth, her expression focused. “No one else will come in.”
Blaine, feeling helpless, realized Annelise seemed to forget she was a woman herself. He was certain Adrian would refuse.
Adrian’s lips curved into a faint smile. To Blaine’s shock, Adrian shrugged off his jacket with a fluid motion.
Blaine’s jaw dropped.
Annelise glanced back. “Upper body, all of it.”
Adrian’s fingers paused briefly, but he complied, his gaze deepening. As he unbuttoned the second button of his shirt, he shot Blaine a look.
A chill ran down Blaine’s spine, and he bolted from the room.
