Chapter 43 The Massage
Each time Annelise leaned forward, her hair brushed lightly against his arm.
During a massage, every sensation was heightened, amplified to a fever pitch.
Adrian’s gaze lingered on the cascade of her hair, his eyes growing darker and more intense.
The session lasted only twenty minutes.
It wasn’t long, yet Adrian found himself fighting the urge to tangle his fingers in her hair, as if some spell had taken hold of him.
“Done,” Annelise said, her voice calm as she gave his calf a final knead with her thumb. “You can get dressed.”
Adrian noticed he was drenched in sweat.
This wasn’t the clammy perspiration of his usual flare-ups. His body felt warm, almost glowing, as if revitalized.
He looked up at Annelise, his eyes deep and unreadable, carrying a flicker of something indefinable. “Thank you.”
“It was a short session today, just a light massage,” Annelise said, wiping sweat from her brow. Her delicate face glis- tened, strands of hair clinging to her pale neck. The dampness only heightened her allure, her lips a vivid red against her cool, almost ethereal beauty, a mix of icy poise and subtle seduction.
Adrian’s throat tightened, and he tugged at the collar of his freshly buttoned shirt.
Annelise turned to retrieve her tools, her hands returning to his body, searching for the right pressure points.
Sitting up now, Adrian could feel her breath grazing his neck-cool, soft, and maddeningly tantalizing.
She seemed to sense a shift in his pulse. “Your breathing’s off. Feeling warm?”
Adrian gave a low “mm,” his striking face turning slightly aside. “How much longer?”
His voice was husky, magnetic, and resonating with an unspoken pull.
“Not long. Just six more points to work on. Hang in there,” Annelise said, her tone steady and professional.
Adrian’s gaze settled on her face. “Dr. Caldwell, you seem awfully comfortable with this treatment method.”
“This method?” Annelise raised an eyebrow.
He leaned closer, his voice a soft murmur. “You’re standing a bit too close.”
“Oh, my apologies,” Annelise said, realizing her posture was indeed a tad intimate.

His shirt hung open, buttons undone. His lips pressed faintly together, hair mussed in a way that exuded raw mas- culinity.
The herbal steam flushed his pale skin with warmth. Her hand pressed against his wrist, her body leaning close, brushing his thigh.
In the mirror, she looked like a siren luring a hero astray.
Annelise sighed inwardly. This man was too gorgeous, and everything she did seemed to carry an ulterior motive. She quickly withdrew her hand. “I’ll be more careful next time.”
“No harm done,” Adrian said, straightening his shirt. “You treat so many patients, Dr. Caldwell. It’s easy to overlook the little things.”

Annelise nodded, her eyes brightening. “Exactly. Don’t worry, I’m not after your looks. To me, men and women are the same.”
She meant to put him at ease, to erase any awkwardness for the patient.
