Chapter 79
Six o’clock, right in the middle of rush hour.
The roads were packed with cars, but Clearwater Alley wasn’t congested. It was just full of people chatting.
“Did you guys hear?”
“What?”
“The doctor from that big hospital across the street got arrested.”
“You mean the Kendrick family, the ones who came looking for trouble last time.”
Mrs. Gable, who was just coming back from grocery shopping, said, “I think they were deliberately trying to bully the Whitman family’s grandma last time!”
“I think so too!
The news said their whole family is a bunch of parasites. So many patients have suffered because of them!”
“She also suppressed her competitors. Grandma Whitman must have been one of her victims!”
Mrs. Gable looked over. “So now you get it. Last time, you all had plenty to say right in front of Annelise!”
“Grandma Whitman has lived here for so long, and there’s never been any trouble.”
“I had a stomachache before, and I couldn’t even afford the medicine from the big hospital. Grandma Whitman made me some oatmeal, added something else to it, I don’t know what, and it fixed me right up for 50 bucks.”
Just as they were talking, Annelise came back, carrying a wooden box, a faint smile on her face. “Mrs. Gable, what costs 50 bucks to fix?”
“Oh, it’s you, Annelise! You startled me!”
Mrs. Gable said warmly, “We were just talking about your grandma. Her remedies work like a charm.”
Annelise’s smile didn’t fade. “My grandma prescribed an herbal remedy for you?”
“It was food therapy.”
Mrs. Gable said, “I know your grandma’s rule. She only helps with wellness, she doesn’t treat illnesses.”
Annelise put the wooden box down. “Everyone’s gathered here because…?”
“Well, we wanted to apologize to your grandma!”
Mrs. Gable glanced at the old neighbors. “They’re just too shy to come inside.”

Annelise smiled. “We’re open for business. Anyone is welcome.”
“Then you have to get your grandma to give my neck a good massage!”
Someone said, “I haven’t been here for a few days, and it’s all stiff and sore again!”
Annelise agreed and opened the door.

Kai, who had been squatting in the inner courtyard tending a fire, immediately stood up straight and ran over like a fierce predator.
Annelise glanced at him.
Kai’s hand, which he was about to raise, dropped. His eyes were wide, as if asking, what’s going on?
“Oh, little Kai.”
Mrs. Gable patted his head. “Where’s your grandma? We’ve come as a group for massages.”
Kai hated it when people ruffled his hair. He resisted the urge to throw her off and pointed fiercely behind him.
Mrs. Gable went off happily, not knowing that if Annelise hadn’t been there, the “little Kai” she mentioned might have flipped her over with one hand.
A group of old neighbors were all talking in the inner courtyard. Whether they were there for treatment or not, at least the shop was back to its usual liveliness.
Annelise was in charge of calming the boy down. Otherwise, in Kai’s current state, he might have smashed a hole in the floor while carrying the wooden soaking tub.
“Something you like.”
Annelise opened her black bag and tossed the modest gift from the Winthrop family over to him.
When Kai saw his favorite premium herbal supplements, his eyes went wide again, and he gestured with a grin.
“Yes, the Winthrop family is very generous.”
Annelise looked at him, her voice slow. “No, you can’t go steal from them.”
Kai tilted his head, his eyes narrowed, as if asking why not.
Annelise tossed the wooden box to him too. “Their young master is a bit dangerous.”
Kai gestured: More dangerous than you?
