“Huh?” Rebecca looked puzzled on the outside, but deep down, she was a bit suspicious.
“Dad called me last night and said he made you mad,” Samuel said, tilting his head as he tried to remember. “Is that what made you upset?”
“No,” Rebecca replied, not wanting Samuel to know that Jeffrey didn’t care about his safety. That would be really hurtful for any kid. She wanted Samuel to grow up healthy and happy.
Samuel fixed his gaze on Jeffrey, refusing to let it go without getting an answer.
Jeffrey reached out and flicked Samuel’s forehead. “You really can’t stand to see me and your mom getting along, can you?”
“You must’ve pulled some sneaky trick to get Mom to come back, Samuel shot back, not buying that a simple trip could fix everything.
“If a scheme could bring her back, you think she’d ever get a chance to leave?” Jeffrey replied in a low, calm voice. “Hand me the suitcase and go wash up for dinner.”
Samuel couldn’t shake the feeling that something fishy was going on, but since Rebecca had already owned up to it, he figured this was one mystery he wasn’t going to crack on the spot.
During dinner, Rebecca was so composed. It was almost like she was on autopilot, acting as if nothing out of the ordinary had happened. On the outside, everything looked completely peaceful.
“Mom’s going to the hospital to see Grandma later,” Rebecca said to Samuel after they finished eating. “Do you want to stay home and read, or come with me?”
“I’ll come with you,” Samuel said, snuggling up to her.
Rebecca didn’t say no.
Just as Rebecca was about to mention it to Jeffrey, he spoke up. “I’ve already had Victor arrange the car. All the keys are still in their usual spots, so you can drive whenever you want.”
“Okay,” Rebecca answered, making sure not to show any attitude toward Jeffrey in front of Samuel.
“I’ve got some stuff to take care of this afternoon, so I won’t be able to go with you,” Jeffrey said, thinking about Richard, who still needed to be dealt with. “Just give me a call if you need anything”
“Okay,” Rebecca replied, her voice as flat as ever.
Half an hour later, Rebecca and Samuel headed out to the hospital.
After watching Rebecca and Samuel drive away. Jeffrey finally waved Tommy and Barry over. “Where’s Richard right now?”
“He’s over at the villa in the southern suburbs,” Barry reported, half–joking. “We’ve been feeding him like a

king these last couple of days. He already gained four pounds.”
Jeffrey said nothing and then climbed into the car and headed over
When Jeffrey arrived. Richard was lounging in the living room, watching TV with a spread of fatry wire. fruit, and snacks laid out in front of him. He looked like he was living a high life
“How’s it been these past few days? Jeffrey asked as he stepped inside
“Not bad,” Richard replied without missing a beat. “It’s just that Fm missing–Seeing Jeffrey, hard shot up from the couch, his eyes narrowing. “What are you doing here?”
“This is my house. Why wouldn’t I be here?” Jeffrey shot back.
“No way. This place belongs to your father, Richard blurted out, his eyes flicking over to Tommy and Barry, who were standing behind Jeffrey. “Ask them. They’ll back me up”
Jeffrey glanced at Tommy and Barry sideways.
Tommy and Barry greeted him immediately, “Mr. Hanson.”
Richard instinctively stepped back a few paces. He finally realized that this was a trap from the very beginning. “You set all this up,” he accused, voice trembling
“Obviously, this whole trap was set up by Mr. Hanson,” Barry said, eyes wide with mock seriousness. “Seriously, clueless much? We told you we worked for Mr. Marcus Hanson, and you just bought it? You’re old enough to know better.”
Richard could only stare at Barry, totally dumbfounded.
Jeffrey lowered his head to hide his smirk.
Barry kept going. “And that scheme you had to get rid of Mrs. Hanson? Yeah, we’ve got all the receipts for that.
too.
“Jeffrey.” Richard gritted his teeth, never in a million years expecting Jeffrey to play it like this.
When Richard had shown up at the Hanson residence, Marcus had made it bluntly obvious he didn’t want anything to do with Richard.
The message was clear–Richard hadn’t gotten the job done, so he might as well get lost before he dragged Marcus down with him. Then, to make it crystal clear, Marcus had his security kick Richard out on the spot.
Before Richard could even blow up, Tommy and Barry hauled him right into a car. He didn’t get the chance to say a single word. They just started spitting out their lines a mile a minute.
“Mr. Jensen, we work for Mr. Marcus Hanson, Tommy said. “He snapped at you to keep Mr. Jeffrey Hanson from getting suspicious. We’re here to move you somewhere safe to lay low for a while.
To keep Mr. Jeffrey Hanson’s crew from tracking you, turn off your phone for now. Don’t worry. We’ve got you covered. Plenty of good food and drinks are waiting. You’ll be living like a king.”

“Got any last–minute complaints?” Harry asked.
Richard barely hesitated before falling for it. “Nope, I’m good, Let’s go.”
“Works for me.” Tommy replied.

Thinking back on everything, Richard just got angrier and angrier. He never imagined this was all Jeffrey’s setup from the start.
Jeffrey strode toward the chair with measured authority, every step radiating control.
Tommy whipped out some alcohol and gave the chair a quick, thorough wipe–down. Satisfied, he posted upt beside it.
“Looks like you didn’t really listen to what I said before, Jeffrey remarked, settling into the chair, his voice steady but cold enough to chill the air. “If that’s how you want to play it, maybe it’s time for a little attitude adjustment.”
“I’m your father-in–law,” Richard blurted out, trying to pull some family card. “You’re not worried folks will start gossiping if you treat me like this?”
Jeffrey couldn’t care less what anyone thought. He just gave Richard a cold look. “Father–in–law? You sure about that?”
Richard froze, struggling to process it. “What are you getting at?”
“I checked into everything between you and Amelia,” Jeffrey continued, cool as ice. “Took your DNA and Rebecca’s for a paternity test. Guess what we found?”
