Rebecca pressed her lips together, then voiced her thoughts. “I want to find Andrea and figure out if she really found Jeffrey because of that scar.”

“Okay,” Jessica said, respecting her decision. “I’ll go with you.”

Jessica knew what Rebecca was thinking.

Rebecca would have preferred it if the person who saved Jeffrey’s life had been Andrea, or even someone else –just not herself. Sometimes, the way fate messes with you is even harder to swallow than the truth.

That night, Rebecca lay awake the whole night.

Her mind kept replaying everything between her and Jeffrey–the sweet times, the arguments, the happy moments, and all the ups and downs.

She remembered every expression, every move, every look in his eyes, and every tone in his voice. She remembered the way he loved her, and she also remembered those sharp words he’d thrown at her out of

anger.

It was just past six in the morning.

She grabbed her phone and tapped on Andrea’s contact.

After a moment of hesitation, she texted Andrea: [I know who it is. The deal’s off.]

Andrea didn’t see the message until after eight. She didn’t even blink–just thought Rebecca was trying to play her. Andrea called, her voice totally nonchalant. “Alright then, spit it out–who is it?”

If she really knew, she wouldn’t have sent that text.

She wouldn’t have done anything except freak out, screaming at Rebecca, demanding to know why she’d taken her place.

“Me,” Rebecca said, her voice steady and brief as she spoke in the study.

Andrea froze.

There was a long silence on her end.

Rebecca didn’t give her any room for excuses. She went straight for it. “I didn’t even know it was Jeffrey back then–so how did you?”

Rebecca had been holding onto a shred of doubt. But after seeing Andrea’s reaction, she was one hundred percent sure now–there was no way around it.

It really was her. She was the one who had saved Jeffrey’s life.

“Rebecca,” Amelia called, knocking on the door of the study. She walked in, saw Rebecca looking really worn out, and asked with concern, “Why do you look so exhausted? Did you stay up working last night?”

“Mom,” Rebecca said, her mood was all over the place–she honestly couldn’t tell if she felt good or bad.

Amelia walked over to her. “What’s wrong?”

After a moment’s hesitation, Rebecca finally said, “I don’t think I need Ms. White, Attorney, to help me with the divorce anymore.”

“Did you talk things over with Jeffrey?” Amelia asked. Before Rebecca could reply, she pressed on, “Even if things seem settled, I still think you should go with the lawsuit. That one–month cooling–off period takes way too long. What if he flips again like last time?”

“He won’t,” Rebecca replied firmly.

To Jeffrey, keeping his word was everything.

His promises meant more to him than his own life, his freedom–more than anything.

Amelia picked up on her daughter’s shift in mood, hesitating before she asked softly, “Is something going on between you and Jeffrey…?”

“I’ve found out some things lately–stuff I can use as leverage to make sure he goes through with the divorce,” Rebecca replied, purposely skirting around the real story. “He really doesn’t have any way out.”

Amelia studied her for a long moment.

Once she was sure Rebecca wasn’t just acting tough or being pressured into it, she didn’t push any further. “Alright.”

“I’ll find some time to treat Ms. White, Attorney, to a meal,” Rebecca said proactively. “She’s done so much for me–I owe her a proper thank you.”

“Let me take care of that. You just focus on what you need to do,” Amelia replied. She and Ms. White, Attorney, had been close friends for years, and even though they hadn’t caught up much recently, their friendship was still solid. “But before you call off the case, I hope you really think this through.”

Rebecca nodded. “Okay.”

Amelia patted her on the head, “If anything’s on your mind, just talk to me, okay? Don’t keep everything bottled up.”

“Okay,” Rebecca replied.

Rebecca spent the whole morning with Jessica. Around ten, Jessica asked, “When are you going to talk to Jeffrey about the divorce? Stanley’s already in the hospital room–he’ll know in half an hour at most.”

Worried that last night’s decision might have been made in the heat of the moment, Ian had deliberately waited until this morning before letting Stanley in.

“Tomorrow,” Rebecca replied.

“What if he says no?” Jessica couldn’t hide the worry in her voice.

“He won’t,” Rebecca said, sounding totally sure.

If you’d asked her before, maybe she would’ve hesitated. But now, after everything, she was dead certain–not a single doubt in her mind.

Seeing Rebecca so certain, Jessica didn’t push it any further. She just quietly hoped Stanley would get to the bottom of things soon and fill Jeffrey in as fast as possible.

Stanley found out everything around eleven that morning.

Instead of telling Jeffrey right away, he dialed up Riley. “Got something important to tell you.”

“Shoot,” Riley said, her voice rough and tired–clearly she’d barely gotten any sleep.

“Andrea isn’t Jeffrey’s savior–she totally faked it,” Stanley spilled, feeling like his brain was about to explode. Never in a million years did he think all that investigating would end up here.

Riley didn’t even flinch. “No shock there, honestly.”

Stanley: “Wait, for real?”

Riley shrugged, her tone casual as ever. “I warned you both, but neither of you bothered to listen.”

“Do we tell Jeffrey or not?” Stanley hesitated, feeling a mess inside. “He still has no clue.”

Riley fired up her computer, totally unfazed. “Why not? Let him see just how dumb he was for losing his wife over a fake savior.”

“But we still don’t know whose identity Andrea stole,” Stanley said, his worry obvious. “What if we expose her and the real person actually.shows up?”

“That’s his problem, not yours,” Riley replied, already launching her game, totally chill. “If this doesn’t teach him a lesson, then just let him figure it out on his own from now on.”

“Riley,” Stanley said, feeling like she was being way too cold–hearted about this.
