She didn’t remember much from her childhood, but she did recall that night down by the riverside–a few adults were standing there, and she ran to tell them someone had fallen in, begging them to help.

They just shrugged and said, “I can’t swim.”

She couldn’t remember their tone, just that Jeffrey’s cries for help were growing weaker and weaker. Her heart was racing; she didn’t even hesitate–she just dove in and pulled him out.

Once they got back to shore, two black–clad bodyguards swooped in and took Jeffrey right out of her hands.

She hadn’t given it much thought back then, but looking back now, she realized they must have been with the Hanson family.

“Why are you asking about this all of a sudden?” Stanley said, knowing Rebecca wasn’t the type to ask random questions.

“It’s nothing,” Rebecca didn’t say much, feeling complicated inside. “I can’t do what you asked. I’m not a therapist–I can’t promise I’ll fix him.”

“He doesn’t need to be cured. Just stick with him for a month–no, a week is enough!” Stanley quickly changed his tune, seeing a chance. “After that, I’ll handle the rest.”

Rebecca nodded. “Okay.”

Surprise flashed in Stanley’s eyes. “Wait, you’re really agreeing?”

Rebecca nodded again. “Yeah.”

Stanley let out a sigh of relief, the tension finally leaving his shoulders.

Rebecca glanced toward the hospital bed, seeing Jeffrey still lying there without moving. “Is he this obsessed with promises just because Marcus and the others broke theirs?” she asked.

“That’s only part of it,” Stanley answered, laying it out for her. “The real turning point was after Andrew’s funeral. Jeffrey went to Uncle Marcus and asked him why he broke his word. Uncle Marcus told him that promises are just meant to be broken. He even said to Jeffrey that nobody in this world can truly keep a promise a hundred percent.”

Rebecca said nothing.

In some ways, every vow, every promise ends up being broken, sooner or later.

But breaking a promise should never come at the cost of someone’s life.

“Jeffrey, stubborn as always, just told them he’d keep every promise,” Stanley said, a heaviness in his voice. “So when Andrea showed up, playing the ‘I saved your life, now you owe me‘ card, Jeffrey wouldn’t turn her down. If he did, Marcus and the others would only use broken promises against him.”

Stanley got why Jeffrey was so hung up about it, but honestly, his whole approach was just way too fixated.

Rebecca kept gazing out the window–no one could tell what was going through her mind.

Stanley picked up on her mood. “Are you still bothered that Jeffrey took Andrea’s side and let it come between you two?”

“What do you need me to do these next few days?” Rebecca asked, her tone still distant.

What really stung wasn’t that Jeffrey felt indebted to Andrea, but the way he acted from the start–and how, because of Andrea, he kept letting her target and suppress Rebecca.

He never once treated her as an equal.

Any normal couple would have talked this through–worked out a plan together.

But Jeffrey wasn’t the type to talk things over–he just made the choice on his own and expected her to go along with it.

That was the thing.

She just couldn’t let it go.

“You don’t have to do anything special,” Stanley said fast, wanting to reassure her. “Just swing by when you get a chance, talk with him a bit. When he wakes up, try to talk him out of getting too hung up on promises.”

Rebecca looked at him.

Before she could say anything, Stanley guessed exactly what she was about to say. “Riley and I have both talked to him, but he just won’t listen.”

“I’ll say whatever you want,” Rebecca replied, her voice still cold. “Whether he listens or not, that’s his business. When it’s all over, I hope you’ll actually follow through, Mr. Garcia.”

Stanley gave her a confused look. “Huh?”

Rebecca’s gaze was icy. “I’m the one who’s going to do it, you just pass me the knife.”

Stanley looked straight at her, caught off guard by her resolve, then nodded firmly. “No problem.”

Rebecca agreed.

After a moment.

The two of them left the lounge area next to the hospital room.

Stanley hesitated for a second, then glanced at Jeffrey lying on the bed, his lips pressed into a thin line as he

spoke tentatively, “I’ll head out for now. If anything comes up, just call me or Gregory”

“Okay,” Rebecca replied.

Stanley just nodded and walked out.

Mark and Gregory were waiting by the door. As soon as they saw Stanley, they both spoke up at once.

Gregory asked, “How did it go?”

Mark asked, “Where’s Ms. Jensen?”

“It went okay,” Stanley replied honestly, then turned to Mark. “Ms. Jensen needs to handle some things with Mr. Hanson for now. We’ll get you set up with a place to stay. Once everything’s settled, you two can head back to Jelasburg.”

“Ms. Jensen agreed to stay?” Gregory asked, a look of honest surprise flashing across his face.

Stanley nodded. “Yeah.”

Gregory finally let out a deep breath, relief washing over him–though there was something uneasy in his expression.

Stanley picked up on it. “What’s up?”

“With Rebecca around, Jeffrey should finally settle down, maybe even start recovering,” Gregory said quietly, speaking from years of knowing him inside–out. “But… if he ever finds out Rebecca only decided to stick around after learning about his past, I’m worried what that’ll do to him…”

He didn’t finish, but Stanley got the message.

But right now, there was no time to worry about that.

Mark watched them trading cryptic clues, then blurted out, “Is he just gonna use her and toss her aside when he’s done?”

Gregory replied quickly, “It’s not like that.”

Mark pressed, “Will it affect Ms. Jensen?”

Gregory and Stanley exchanged a look, then both nodded. “There’s a chance it might.”

Mark pressed, “Negative?”

Stanley just stayed silent.

Gregory thought for a second, then said, “Yeah, you could say that.”

Mark didn’t hesitate–he just strode straight toward the hospital room, not giving a damn about anything else.

“What do you think you’re doing?” Stanley blocked his way, eyes sharp and wary.
