The door slammed against the wall with a heavy thud.

Rebecca turned toward the noise and saw Karen, looking panicked and with her clothes in complete disarray, bolting out of the private room next door. As Karen ran past, she shot Rebecca a quick glance–without saying a word, she sped on and rushed outside.
Meanwhile, two burly bodyguards rushed out from the private room.
Two burly bodyguards came rushing out of the private room.
Rebecca instantly got the gist of the situation. She shouted after Karen, who was already a few steps ahead, “Karen!”
Karen stopped in her tracks.
Rebecca hurried toward her. “Come here, I’ll protect you.”
Karen’s eyes flickered with hesitation. She glanced at the bodyguards Mark was blocking, then back at Rebecca, who faced her with a calm and determined look. For a moment, Karen’s mind was racing with a jumble of emotions.
Rebecca quietly straightened Karen’s messy clothes. When she saw the tear in Karen’s top, she didn’t blink- she shrugged off her own jacket and wrapped it around Karen, then handed her the car keys. “The license plate ends with 866. Go wait for us in the car.”
“But…” Karen bit her lip, looking uncertain.
She was nothing like the Karen Rebecca remembered from the hospital.
Back then, Karen was all smiles–friendly yet somehow a little distant. Now, worry and fear were swirling inside her, all her defenses stripped away.
“Don’t worry, I’ve got this,” Rebecca said confidently, shooting a look at Mark. “And if it comes down to it, Mark can take on ten guys at once–they won’t stand a chance.”
Karen handed the keys back to her. “I’m not leaving you.”
‘She’s trying to protect me–how could I just run off and leave her behind?‘ Karen thought, her heart pounding
Rebecca simply nodded, accepting her decision and letting her stay.
“Move it, or don’t blame us if you get hurt,” one of the bodyguards snapped at Mark, looking a little less tense
when he saw Karen hadn’t bolted.
“Go ahead, make my day,” Mark said, ultra polite. “Seriously, it’s wall–to–wall cameras in here. If you guys wanna start something and I accidentally put you in the hospital, that’s called self–defense.”

The two bodyguards glanced uncertainly at each other.
Mark smirked. “You gonna make a move, or just stand there all day?”

The bodyguards furrowed their brows and tried to throw their weight around. “Do you have any idea who we’re with?”
“Not a clue.” Mark replied, completely straight–faced. “If you’re dying to find out, just call the cops–they’re great at helping lost souls track down their real identity.”
The bodyguards gawked at him, utterly bewildered.
‘Is this guy nuts?‘ they both thought.
“Want me to dial for you?” Mark whipped out his phone, sizing them up from head to toe. “Judging by that last question, I’m guessing using a smartphone’s a bit above your pay grade.”
Rebecca let out a soft sigh.
She grabbed Karen’s hand and said directly, “Let’s go wait for him in the car.”
“The guy inside is Mr. Sutton, Jelasburg’s big–shot real estate tycoon,” Karen said, voice still shaky but finall able to get the words out.
“It’s fine,” Rebecca said, still holding her hand as they walked out. “Mark can handle it.”
“Where do you think you’re taking her?” came a booming voice from behind–a second later, he started cussing them out. “Are you all seriously that useless? I asked you to bring her over, not stand around like idiots!”
“It’s their fault–they wouldn’t let us pass,” one of the bodyguards jumped in, immediately scrambling to cover himself.
Mr. Sutton strode over, dressed to the nines in his tailored suit.
Rebecca hadn’t recognized him at first, but as soon as she saw his face, the memory clicked. He wasn’t your cliché balding big–shot with a beer belly–Mr. Sutton was polished, carried himself with that seasoned professional look. On the surface, he was exactly the sort of sophisticated older guy people wouldn’t mind having dinner with.
But Rebecca knew better.
Jeffrey had mentioned this dude to her at a party once.
He looked every bit the gentleman, but under that smooth exterior? Grade–A dirtbag–domestic violence, cheating, you name it. He didn’t just keep one mistress stashed away; he had side chicks lined up from here to
next week.
“And who might this be?” Mr. Sutton’s gaze landed on Rebecca, and his eyes lit up with interest.
Karen instinctively stepped in front of Rebecca, trying to hide her fear. “Mr. Sutton, she’s just a bystander. If

you’ve got a problem, take it out on me.”

She’d been so frantic a moment ago that it hadn’t even crossed her mind.

Now reality crashed down on her–Rebecca and Jeffrey were already divorced, and the Jensen family was flat broke. Rebecca was totally on her own.
If she let this creep get his hooks into Rebecca too, it would be on her forever. She’d never be able to live with
herself.
“Why don’t you bring your friend in for a few drinks with me? If you cooperate, I’ll just pretend nothing ever happened,” Mr. Sutton said, flashing his smoothest smile, like he was doing everyone a big favor. “How does
that sound?”
Karen didn’t even get a chance to respond.
But Mark jumped in first, his voice deadly serious. “Sorry, but my boss doesn’t drink.”
Mr. Sutton perked right up. “So your boss is a woman, huh? That’s a new one.”
Mark shrugged, not missing a beat. “Boss is boss. Since when does gender matter?”
“Just surprised, honestly. Most women still stick to the house, playing wife and mother,” Mr. Sutton said, his gaze practically glued to Rebecca and Karen–beautiful women were definitely his weakness. “If your boss managed to climb this high, she must have… quite a set of skills.”
He deliberately drew out the word “skills,” making sure everyone caught the sleazy undertone in his voice.
“She sure is,” Mark replied, totally straight–faced. “Otherwise, she wouldn’t be the next in line for both the Quinn and Guzman families.”
Mr. Sutton froze.
He frowned, his eyes narrowing. “The Quinn and Guzman families?”
Mark’s face didn’t change for a second–he just kept that same blank stare. “Oh, I almost forgot to introduce my boss–Rebecca Jensen. Her mother’s Amelia Jensen, her ex–husband’s Jeffrey, her biological dad is Ryan Guzman, her adoptive dad is Richard Jensen, her grandpa’s Sebastian Quinn, and her brother is the CEO of the Quinn Group…”
He just kept on listing names, barely pausing for breath, like he’d memorized a whole family tree and wasn’t about to stop anytime soon.
After a brief pause, she gave him a nod.
If her family connections could get them out of this mess, she wasn’t about to shy away from using them.
Mr. Sutton’s face went ghostly pale.
Karen’s eyes went wide in shock.
