“Your wish is my command, Ms. Jensen,” Tom said, making a show of it like a born performer.
After getting home that day, Rebecca spent over an hour playing with Samuel, then went to find Amelia. The two strolled lazily by the garden. Seeing Rebecca’s peaceful look, Amelia asked, “Got something on your mind?”
Rebecca nodded.
She paused and then asked, “Is it wrong to doubt people who treat me well?”
Amelia raised an eyebrow. “A friend?”
“No,” Rebecca shook her head.
Amelia thought about who Rebecca had been close to lately, then asked cautiously, “Tom and Mark?”
‘Am I really that obvious?‘ Rebecca wondered. She felt so conflicted–part of her wanted to trust them, but another part was uneasy about their backgrounds. And she didn’t want her suspicions to hurt them.
Amelia shrugged, “Not really.”
Rebecca felt relieved. “That’s good.”
“So what is it you’re suspicious of?” Amelia pressed. She didn’t know much about what had been going on; since coming back, she’d left everything up to Rebecca.
Rebecca told her about her worries and the things she’d noticed.
It wasn’t like she thought Tom and Mark were bad guys. She just felt their backgrounds were a bit mysterious.
She liked things to be straightforward, with no walls or mistrust between people.
It took about five minutes for Rebecca to finish explaining everything.
When she was done, Amelia asked, “Do you want me to look into it for you?”
Rebecca nodded. “Would you?”
Amelia said, “Let’s go.”
She led Rebecca upstairs.
Amelia wasn’t one to hesitate–action was always her thing.
“Honestly, you could just let Samuel handle this,” Amelia said as she booted up her laptop, telling Rebecca about all the progress Samuel had made lately. “Ile’s already better than most hackers out there.”
Rebecca stared in disbelief. “Wait, really?!”

Whoa… he’s that good?‘ she wondered, completely surprised.
“Is there something else you want to tell me?” Amelia said, typing away at her keyboard.
“Huh?” Rebecca blinked, thrown off guard.
“You glanced at me five times when you walked in,” Amelia added without missing a beat.
Rebecca was speechless.
‘Seriously, is everyone here some kind of mind–reader except me?‘ Rebecca thought.

After mulling it over for a bit, Rebecca brought up something else while Amelia was busy investigating. “Old Mr. Lawrence called me over after work today. He said if I’m willing, Uncle David can transfer the shares to
me.”
“So, what do you make of it?” Amelia kept her expression neutral.
“Feels sketchy to me,” Rebecca said, sitting right beside her, mind whirling. “You always said Mr. Guzman is sharp. There’s no way a smart guy like him would do something out of character.”
Amelia’s lips quirked in a subtle smile.
She found her daughter’s reasoning quietly satisfying.
Rebecca leaned on her hand and sighed, “I’ve been turning it over in my head all the way back, but still can’t see what his real motive is.”
“It’s pretty straightforward,” Amelia replied, seasoned after years of playing business games. “He thinks you’re worth the risk.”
Rebecca was still puzzled. “What do you mean?”
Amelia laid it out cold: “To be fair, it’s Jeffrey standing behind you–that’s why he’s willing to take a gamble.”
Suddenly, Rebecca’s confusion vanished and things started falling into place.
Her mind cleared up like a fog lifting.
“He doesn’t want the Guzman Group’s shares to fall to outsiders after Ryan’s gone, and definitely not to his brother, either,” Amelia explained, knowing exactly what Old Mr. Lawrence was thinking. “You’re the best fit given the circumstances–Ryan’s daughter, and you have Jeffrey, basically a trendsetter in business, backing you.”
“But we’re already divorced,” Rebecca pointed out, even though things were crystal clear now.
“Divorce doesn’t put an end to the benefits,” Amelia said matter–of–factly. “They’ve seen the birthday gifts Jeffrey gave you, heard about the settlement you got when you split. For them, as long as Jeffrey still cares, whether you’re divorced makes no difference. If you take over for the Guzman family, he’ll be there quietly calling the shots and shielding you from trouble.”

Chapter 319
Rebecca felt her heart sink bit by bit
She’d never imagined Mr. Guzman could see things this far ahead.

“Honestly that’s pretty much the way it is, Amelia said, glancing at her daughter with a mix of emotions in her eyes
She might have her reservations about Jeffrey, but had to admit, when it came to Rebecca, the guy was persistent. She hadn’t paid much attention before, but lately it was obvious there was extra protection around
the house.
When someone truly wants to protect another, nothing and no one can stand in the way,
“I understand now,” Rebecca said, feeling much calmer after finally piecing it all together.
“Seriously, don’t carry this burden,” Amelia reassured her, wanting her daughter to live her own life and make her own decisions. “You get to choose what you want. Whatever you do, you’ve got my support–always.”
Rebecca nodded softly, her heart warmed by Amelia’s words.
After chatting for a while longer, Amelia told her to head back to her room and wait for the results.
Rebecca didn’t ask any more questions. She collapsed onto her bed, and right as she sank into the mattress, her mother’s analysis and everything Jeffrey had done started circling through her mind.
She really didn’t want to admit it, but her mom was right–the reason Mr. Guzman wanted to pass the shares to her was because of the power Jeffrey had behind her.
Thinking about all this, Rebecca pulled out her phone and opened up her chat with Jeffrey.
She typed out a message and hit send.
His phone chimed with the distinct ringtone Rebecca had set for him, just as he was taking a shower.
He didn’t even bother to finish rinsing off before grabbing his phone with wet hands and foam still on his body. Rebecca’s message popped up–it was about the time and place for Samuel’s birthday.
Jeffrey: [Got it.]
Rebecca hesitated for a moment, caught off guard.
Rebecca couldn’t help but think, ‘Did he really just answer in a split second?‘
She thought about sending another message, but then figured there was no need. So she locked her screen and tossed the phone to the side.
After waiting for a response that never came, Jeffrey set his phone aside. A few normal notifications chimed, but he didn’t even bother to look–they weren’t from Rebecca anyway.
That special tone never sounded again.
