They thought that the high–grade golden emerald and rare four–piece gem were fantastic enough finds already. But the glass–clear purple emerald Valerie had in her hand had utterly upturned their worldview.
This grade and shade of purple was enough to become a gemstone shop’s prized centerpiece. It would fetch an insanely high price if it were ever to enter the market.
Valerie had remained calm throughout the event from start to finish.
She smiled innocently, waving the pen in her hand. “You all saw me twirling my pen, right? What is it? Are the rocks I chose not good enough? I heard that emeralds are prized for their green shades.
“Look at this emerald I bought with all its different colors. It doesn’t look like it’ll fetch a good price at all. I’m just a country bum who’s never been exposed to the great big world, after all. What terrible luck I’ve had today. I’m so sorry you guys had to spend all that money to buy these!”
Both Noah and Jonah remained speechless. They shared the same question in their minds at that moment–Was Valerie actually foolish, or was she just pretending to be this way?
Later, the three went to have a celebratory dinner together before parting ways at around 6:00
After rejecting Noah and Jonah’s offer to drive her home, Valerie tossed her purple emerald into her canvas bag. She then drove off in her little old SUV.
She had no clue that Noah had informed Lucius of her rock–cutting escapades on the mall’s top floor. Noah had waxed poetic about Valerie’s skills and how expensive the gems she’d chosen were.
Lucius felt upset as he listened to Noah describe all the interesting things that had happened today. Even his wine had begun to taste sour.
Valerie only returned home from her busy day around 11:00 pm.
The moment she stepped into the house, she saw Lucius sitting there, stone–faced, like a solemn judge. The living room was pindrop silent.
Valerie tiptoed awkwardly inside. When she walked past Luciùs, she said, “It’s so late. Why are you still up?”
Lucius stared at her. “What time is it right now?”
Valerie glanced at her watch. “11:20 pm.”
Chapter 69
2/2
“Why are you home so late?”
Valerie was a little taken aback by his question. “Do I need to answer that?”
“Yes,” Lucius ordered sternly.
“Didn’t we agree not to inquire into one another’s private lives?” Valerie retorted.
Lucius remained firm. “The White family has always been stern about its rules. You have to adhere to them now that you’re here.”
Valerie rolled her eyes. “Why didn’t you inform me of these ‘rules‘ when you asked me to live with you? Why only tell me about them now?”
