Chapter 72

Darrell sensed Lucius‘ hostile gaze and asked Valerie in a low voice, “What’s your relationship with Mr. White? Why is he looking at me in such an unfriendly manner?”
“When has he ever looked at you in a friendly way?” Valerie shot back.
Darrell shot her a meaningful smile. “You seem to be aware of the bad blood between Mr.
White and me, Ms. Collins.”
“Your meeting with him at The Golden Chalice seemed tense, so I figured you two must be at odds with one another.”
“You have quite a keen sense of observation.”
“Thank you.”
Darrell himself was a fine and reputable man. Now that Valerie was by his side, the number of people turning back to look at him reached an even greater high.
“Would you mind telling me what your relationship with Lucy is, Ms. Collins?” Darrell said.
Lucinda was supposed to be Darrell’s plus–one to the auction tonight. But Lucinda had suddenly called him last night and told him to join the event with her friend instead. Lucinda
had even forbidden Darrell from refusing.
Lucinda was an easily jealous woman. She’d never been so “gracious” to Darrell before.
So, Darrell was curious about what kind of relationship Lucinda and Valerie had, since Lucinda could even lend her boyfriend to Valerie.
Valerie shot Darrell a look. “Did Lucinda never tell you how we met?”
“She just said that you’re her best and most important friend. She’d even die for you if she needed to,” Darrell answered.
Valerie said nothing. Why was Lucinda taking a page out of Kieran’s book? Kieran had once said the same thing to Valerie, too.
She didn’t pursue the topic further. “I’ll be sure to repay the favor to you one day.”
Darrell smiled knowingly. “Lucy will repay it to me in your stead.”
Valerie and Darrell had already reached Lucius‘ side by the tinie they finished talking.
Darrell nodded politely at Lucius. “We meet again, Mr. White. It seems fate has led us back together.”
Lucius turned away from Valerie and said to Darrell, “I wouldn’t have known how open you are

when it comes to relationships if it weren’t for said fate, Mr. Foster. After all, you had another woman on your arm the last time we met at The Golden Chalice.”
Hearing that, Darrell gave a wide smile. “Who could ever refuse an invite from a woman as stunning as Ms. Collins?”
Lucius sneered and retorted, “I didn’t take you for such a vulgar man, Mr. Foster.”
“We’re all human here. Who hasn’t ever been vulgar at least once in their life?” Darrell
retaliated.
Instead of responding, Lucius pretended to examine Valerie. “You look familiar, miss.”
Valerie elegantly fanned herself with her hand fan. “I could say the same about you, good sir.”
