Chapter 14

Three men stand shoulder to shoulder at the end of my bed, and I don’t know where to focus my attention. They are all waiting for me to say something, but I am at a loss for words! Their eyes are bearing down on me so intensely that I fidget uncomfortably.

“I’m sorry,” I finally say, breaking the awkward silence. “Did you say mate?”

Damon smiles smugly at the other men and steps closer/but Jake pulls him back. “How did you get onto the pack territory anyway?”

Damon rolls his eyes. “What’s the matter, little brother? Are you worried I am here for your title?”

My brain is starting to hurt as I try to process what they are all saying. My eyes flicker between Jake and Damon, trying to see the resemblance between them, but they look so different. They keep throwing underhanded insults at each other as if no one else is in the room, but the noise is making my head pound.,

“Will someone explain what the fuck is going on?” I shout.

Instantly, Damon and Jake whisper apologies before moving to opposite sides of the bed. While Jake takes my good hand and strokes it gently, Damon keeps growling at him.

“I need you both to leave,” the good–smelling healer demands.

They look at him like he has lost his mind, but with a simple raise of his eyebrow, they exit the room. I smile gratefully at the man. “You will have to teach me how you did that.

“They are scared of me,” he laughs. “Isn’t it obvious?”

I look him up and down. While he looks strong, he doesn’t look very intimidating. “Not really.”

He smiles, and I swear the scent of raspberries grows stronger in the air. “My name is Theo. I am a healer.”

“Like a witch,” I say again before I can stop myself.

He doesn’t chastise me, but he does sit on the edge of my bed. “Kind of, but my magic is more infernal.”

His eyes flash pitch black, and I gasp aloud. “Oh. You are a…”

When I can’t bring myself to finish the sentence, he laughs. “A demon?”

My mouth goes dry, and I nod. I have only heard about demons and witches in passing. While they live among us, like other supernatural creatures, they tend to keep to their own kind. I never thought I would lay eyes on one, and I never thought if I did, that he would be so attractive.

“Charlotte,” he practically purrs my name. “What do you know about your father?”

I am pulled from my thoughts, but I can only seem to focus on his lips. “Uh,” I stumble over my words. “He was a Delta in the Blackthorn Pack. He was killed in a rogue attack several years ago.”

Theo gets to his feet and turns his back to me. “Not your knight. Your father.”

Without his beautiful face looking down on me, I am able to think more clearly. While I was fading in and out of consciousness, I heard someone mention a knight before, but I thought I had dreamed it.

“I don’t know what you mean,” I admit. “Delta Daniel was my father.”

It isn’t a question, and even if it were, Theo materializes from the room. My mouth is still hanging open, and I have to make a physical effort to close it. I wait for someone to come back into my room, but it remains silent.

Leaning back in the hospital bed, I flip through the channels on the TV. Only two channels come in clearly, but one is a history channel, so I am not complaining. I am halfway through an episode about aliens and the pyramids when the door to my room swings open.

Leah hisses through her teeth when she sees me. “You look like shit.”

“Thanks,” I reply, not taking my eyes off the show.

“So,” she skirts around what she wants to say. “Things got interesting while you were sleeping.”

“Sleeping?” I ask. “How long was I out?”

“Three days,” she replies as if it is no big deal. “But Alpha Ronan came for a visit. Daddy swore you weren’t in the pack house; it wasn’t a lie, but Ronan searched for your scent and, well, ripped apart your room.”

“No,” I cry out. “Please tell me he didn’t take anything.

“Nope,” she pops the p. “But he wanted to take this ugly box. He said you stole it from your mother. Daddy told him that if that were true, your mother could come get it from you.”

I groan loudly, covering my face with my good hand. “Please tell me she isn’t coming.”

Leah sits on the edge of my bed, and for the first time, I bet in her whole life, she looks concerned. “I think something bad happened to her.”

I lurch forward. “What makes you say that?”

“Ronan said she was sick. Werewolves don’t get sick.”

“I think her wolf abandoned her when my father died. I wouldn’t be surprised if she is sick.”

Leah pulls her bottom lip between her teeth. I look at the ceiling, but Leah’s loud sigh tells me she isn’t done. “What else?”
