Giselle walked to the door and looked out. The sight of the empty hallway caused her to feel a little bad.
After all, Gideon had saved her life tonight, so she could live to see another day. However, she couldn't even do the bare minimum to make him happy.
Back in the bathroom, she filled the tub with warm water and sank into it. The heat wrapped around her like a soft cocoon, slowly driving out the chill that had lodged deep in her bones.
With her eyes closed, her mind wandered back to the terror and hopelessness she had felt in the cold storage room. The memory of Donovan almost losing his life to save her pierced her like a blade.
She thought she had buried her feelings long ago, but the fear of losing him cracked that illusion. When his heart stopped, the despair hit so hard it nearly suffocated her.
After the bath drove away the cold, she curled up in bed again. She was too exhausted to think about anything else and drifted quickly into a deep sleep.
The next morning, her strength had fully returned, and her mind was clear. She finally began to focus on the person who had tried to kill her.
It wasn't hard to figure out. No one in this world, aside from Renee and Anne, would go so far as to want her dead.
She mentally replayed the events of that day. She had a conflict with Anne outside the elevator at Donovan's branch office in the morning and then saw her again at night near the cold storage room.
Moreover, based on Anne's charade in the hospital while playing the victim, the truth had partially revealed itself.
There were no front-facing security cameras outside the cold storage room. If she chose to go to the police, even if they found traces proving Anne had shut the cold storage door, Renee would still have plenty of ways to pull strings and get her daughter off scot-free.
Just thinking about that hellish experience in the cold storage room made Giselle fully grasp how cruel, heartless, and vicious Anne was.
