Breaking Mr. Cold (Giselle and Donovan) novel Chapter 216

"Sorry," Giselle said quietly. "Mr. Kane was right. All of this is my fault. If it weren't for me, you wouldn't have been dragged into that mess just now."

"Enough." Gideon shot her a look. "Even if Donovan killed me, it still wouldn't have anything to do with you. What he just did was nothing but jealousy mixed with weakness. As long as he stays out of our way from now on, I couldn't care less."

Giselle had nothing to say to that. In the past, she might have stood firmly by his side, stormed after Donovan to confront him, and maybe even called the police. But now, she didn't see the point.

After all, Donovan had given her ten billion dollars. That was more than enough to show his sincerity. There was no need to fuss over details. The more she clung to it, the harder it would be to leave his world behind.

"Let's go." Gideon's back wasn't hurting as much anymore, and with Ethan's resistance clearly softened, he rose and followed her out of the office.

Back in the car, Giselle took the driver's seat while Gideon settled in beside her. She kept her eyes on the road, hands on the wheel, but her mind wandered. Her gaze was fixed ahead, her expression distant and silent.

Gideon caught her profile—stunning, but clouded with loneliness—and felt a pang in his chest.

"It's not even four yet. The city hall's still open. Should we just get the marriage certificate now?" he asked, testing the waters.

"Not today," she said, glancing at him. "It's a bit late, and after what happened in the office, I'm not in the right mood. You're hurt too. There's no rush."

Something inside him seemed to sink.

"Alright." He gave a short, cold laugh. "You're right. Best to pick a lucky day for it. Today's been one mishap after another, not exactly auspicious. And besides, I forgot my documents."

"Okay. We'll do it another day then."

Gideon leaned back in his seat, falling silent.
