Giselle's incident struck Tony hard. Overwhelmed by anguish, he postponed a surgery scheduled for the next day and went home, unable to calm down for a long time.
Renee, however, wasn't the least bit affected.
"Stop acting like this," she ordered. "You know exactly what kind of person your daughter was. Never mind that she was hooked on reckless sports, but she was always getting involved with shady men. Her life is a complete mess.
"Dying young was only a matter of time. If she didn't die today, she would've died someday soon—"
"Shut up!" Tony bellowed, his voice dripping with irritation. "You should know how you've treated her all these years. If it weren't for the peace of our family, do you think I'd turn a blind eye? Now that she's gone, I don't expect you to empathize with me—but at least don't talk about bullshit like this!"
Renee's face flushed with anger. "Why are you yelling at me now? I'm not the one who killed her! Did you forget she was the one responsible for my miscarriage years ago? We lost our third child because of her!
"And when she got older, she had no problem ruining Anne's marriage. How do you expect me to feel sorry for a bitch like her? Only when she's dead can peace be restored in our family!"
"Alright, Mom. Stop arguing with Dad," Anne intervened smoothly. "Mom, you have to understand Dad. After all, Giselle was his daughter. If it were me who died, he would've been equally devastated. Just give him some time to adjust."
With that, she deliberately sidled up to Tony and held him. "Dad, I know Giselle's death is a huge blow to you, but it's a fact we all have to accept. You still have Mom, Sebastian, and me—at least the four of us are still together. You didn't lose anything.
"I hope you'll feel better, Dad. Your patients are still waiting for you to save them. Take care of yourself, okay?"
At this rate, Tony didn't have the heart to reprimand Anne for calling the police. He sighed and trudged upstairs.
