That slap landed so hard it stunned not only Giselle and Grace, but even Donovan himself. If he remembered correctly, this was the first time in his life Dorothea had ever hit him.
Ever since he was young, she'd doted on him. She understood and respected him, supporting his every decision without a word of objection. Even after he moved out, he still held significant power in the family.
Everyone, including Dorothea and Zachary, saw him as the pillar of their family.
And now, the same mother who had always obeyed Donovan had just slapped him across the face. That alone explained how furious she was.
"Dorothea, calm down." Grace quickly held Dorothea, patting her chest to ease her breathing. "Don just lost his head for a moment. Don't get so worked up.
"You've had brain surgery a few years ago, haven't you? What do we do if you get too agitated and something happens?"
The situation had turned so dire that even Giselle didn't dare keep up her usual defiance. If she pushed too far and Dorothea really collapsed, she'd be the one to blame.
Donovan would probably feel guilty enough to leave her, and then everything she'd worked for would go up in smoke.
Giselle steadied herself and softened her tone, ready to submit to Dorothea with an apology. Gone was her indifference, and she chose her words with care.
"Mrs. Kane Senior, I apologize for what happened earlier," she said. "I'm also aware that you're prejudiced against me. But Donovan and I are legally married now. Divorce isn't an option.
"All I can do is prove myself worthy of being his wife from this point forward—"
