Zachary racked his brain but still couldn't understand how he could've done something like that with Anne.
None of it made any sense to him.
"Stop beating yourself up," Anne said as she slid closer to him. Then, she added dismissively, "It happened. So what? We're adults. It's no big deal."
However, Zachary pushed her away again. He said with frustration, "It would've been fine if you were just a stranger. But do you remember whom you were once engaged to?"
If she had been anyone else, he could've brushed it off.
However, Anne had once been engaged to his uncle. She had almost become his aunt.
He'd never even considered getting involved with her. He barely even wanted to exchange a word with her. The thought of what had happened between them last night made his skin crawl.
Sensing his turmoil, Anne sneered and comforted him. "Don't overthink it. Honestly, nothing has ever happened between me and Donovan, even though we were once engaged.
"Bullshit!" Zachary snapped. "If I remember right, you were pregnant with his kid!"
"The kid never existed," Anne replied flatly.
At this point, she finally dropped the facade. "Fine, I'll tell you the truth. Back then, I wanted to marry Donovan so badly that I faked the whole thing. I staged a pathetic charade and pretended to be pregnant to fool everyone.
"But then… I realized he never cared about me. He didn't even give a damn if I lived or died. That's when I finally gave up on him…"
