Frowning, Patrick said, "I admit that I didn't take care of your feeling. I was terrified by how my mom reacted in the phone, not to mention that you refused to open the door for me and let me talk face-to-face with you. How can you expect me to remain calm in a situation like this? Weren't I trying to figure out the whole scenario and understand you once you explained it to me earlier?"
Upon seeing that the anger in his voice was receding, she could not help but reply gently, "It's good to know that you understand it now. After all, I'm never the one who starts the conflict between Eve and me. I never meant to push her to her breaking point. I feel like it would be better for you to return a call to her and comfort her now. What do you think?"
Hearing this, Patrick nodded before he said, "You're right. I'll go and call her now."
Staring at his back upon his leaving, Amelia sank into her own thought as soon as she brought the door close gently.
She was blinded by his anger upon him breaking into his room which resulted in her overlooking the fear underlying in his ferocious gaze. And she began to wonder what kind of chaos Eve had made during her call to Patrick.
At the end of the day, Eve was never one who could make others' lives easier.
A moment later, Amelia heard Patrick knocking again.
Opening the door, all she could see was Patrick standing at the door. He gritted his teeth before he said, "I've made the call, but it was not mom but granny who picked up the call. She told me that mom was sent to her room by the servants probably after she was tired of sobbing."
"Granny?" Amelia felt like she was choked by this information. It her a long break before she could find her voice, "So granny is all this while at home. Your mom had lied to me."
Standing at the door still, Patrick looked at her in disbelief as he asked, "Don't you have other things in your mind right now except for this?"
She found his words amusing as she replied, "What else do you expect me to think of now?"
In the face of his silence, Amelia said expressionlessly, "Fine, if you insist for an answer, I can still tell you though. She had been causing chaos for one and a half hour before she felt exhausted. I'm impressed of her stamina."
There was no doubt that her reply sounded more like a sarcasm to Patrick.
He lowered down his head to the extent that he was inches away from her face. He then said insidiously, "You're always good at words. Why can't you at least say something comforting now?"
Amelia took a step back before she said, "I understand that you're not in a good mood because of Eve. But why can't you understand that I'm upset too because of her! I'm not under any obligation to comfort you!
And I think that I'm more worthy of sympathy than her do. After all, at least she still has such a filial son like you to stand up for her. As for me, I've always been a lone fighter in this battle."
Upon hearing this, Patrick could not help contending in frustration, "Who says that you're a lone fighter? It's my first time ever standing up to my mom for a woman the other day in The Hopper Mansion!"
"First time? For a woman?" Before she would let her emotions rule, Amelie began to say expressionlessly, "I'm afraid that I'm not the woman that you're talking about now."
Patrick was stunned for awhile before he realized that it was Sissi that she was having in her mind. At this realization, all in a sudden he was not sure what to retort.
Amelia glanced at him sarcastically. She was well aware that she could shut him up whenever she brought Sissi up in their arguments.
But she could not help feeling pathetic as she never found herself happy in face of his silence.
He broke out in a sad laughter before he said, "Ha! It always means lesser or nothing to you for everything that I've done for you."
Amelia looked at him in his eyes as she said, "You're right. I can't overlook the unconditional love you used to have for Sissi. Hence, as compared to what you've done for her, it's no longer something new or more for what you're doing for me now. Precisely speaking, you're just repeating the history."
"Repeating the history? How interesting that you're actually thinking this way."
For whatever he had been doing for her, she could not help thinking that he had done the same for Sissi before. In other words, she could never be his first time for everything.
Patrick said in disappointment, "You're good at finding excuse for your heartlessness."
Amelia replied expressionlessly, "Whatever you say."
It was also at this time that her phone on the table rang.
She took a glance at it just to realize that it was a
call from The Hopper Mansion.
The following day.
At Apex Construction Corporation.
Standing right in front of Amelia, Audrey reported, "Ms. Amelia, Benji claims that he has something urgent that he wishes to speak to you. He's now
waiting outside of your office."
Amelia's expression darkened.
Benji was known as someone arrogant who struggled to get along with others well. It was indeed rare for him to request a meeting with her on normal days. Therefore, Amelia could not help feeling suspicious of his sudden request today.
Glancing up, she said, "Please let him in now."
Not long after Audrey left, Amelia saw Benji coming into her office.
Amelia gave him a friendly smile before she said, "Please take a seat, Mr. Benji."
"Thank you, President Ramsay." After taking a seat expressionlessly, Benji cut straight to the point, "President Ramsay, I'm here to represent all my colleagues in the design department. There's one thing me and my colleagues find perplexing. Do you mind answering our doubt?"
Amelia gave him a tiny nod before she said smilingly, "Go ahead and ask me."
"Why did President Ramsay only bring Kaiden along to the construction site of Eastern District yesterday? Don't you think that the project is something involving the whole design department?"
Apparently, Benji was not planning to beat around the bush upon questioning Amelia. Not only did he sound excessively straightforward, he sounded as if he was blaming her for intentionally leaving out the remaining designing team. As his leader and the chairperson of the company, Amelia could not help but find his questioning inappropriate.
Amelia looked at Benji in his eyes and said, "I should correct you that the planning project is not only a project involving the design department but the entire company! Do you think that I should bring along everyone in this company to the site yesterday, Mr. Benji?"
