"He's going back with you anyway. You don't have to come and look fortroubles now."
"You sound as if you're the one who's going to decide Milton's whereabouts. Don't you forget that I'm his girlfriend."
"Of course I remember. But do you believe that I can also talk him into breaking up with you right away?"
The other end of the phone fell into momentary silence.
Not getting any response from Maryanne, Amelia could not help but scoff, "I have not forgotten what had you done to me before. I know that he likes you, that's why I choose not to air your dirty laundry. However, I have to warn you that I'm not going to tolerate with your craziness endlessly."
Maryanne sneered, "Go ahead and tell him the truth so that he can break up with me! However, I doubt that Aunt Sierra is going to let go of this matter easily."
"What does this has to do with her?"
"Think about it. You are well aware that I'm a malicious woman from the very beginning. Even so, you decided to remain in silence and let your buddy to continue dating with me. What will Aunt Sierra think of you if she were to learn of this one day? I'm sure that she is going to blame you for not warning his son earlier. To be frank, I kind of looking forward to what will happen between the three of you at that time."
Frowning, Amelia said, "Don't you know that they treat you as part of their family and they sincerely care for you? How can you return their kindness with such an evil thought?"
"I won't push you down the stairs at all if I were to be a kind person. Don't assume every woman to be as kind as you. Your kindness is going to bring you down one day. In the worst case, you're going to disappoint an elder who hopes for nothing but her son's happiness."
Amelia could feel her heart sinking. She was finally convinced that her kindness was not going to get repaid with kindness for Maryanne.
"Amelia, what I'm trying to tell you is that there are only two options left for you. You can choose to get rid of me now or you can stay away from Milton as far as possible. Who knows I might be moved by your effort and decide to repay them with kindness from now onwards!"
With that said, Maryanne hung up the call.
Amelia could not help scolding, "What a psycho!"
Milton glanced up and asked concerningly, "What's wrong?"
Amelia struggled to look for a reasonable explanation all in a sudden. With her gaze flickering, she muttered, "Um, it's a client who had entered into an oral agreement with us earlier. He suddenly called to say that he had changed his mind."
Upon hearing this, Milton could not help feeling relieved, "I was thinking of something much worse than this a while ago. You should leave it though. After all, Apex Construction had successfully secured the planning project at Eastern District. I'm sure that this is a huge project that is going to keep you busy for some time. Speaking of this project, had Patrick learnt of this news?"
"He was aware of it."
Hearing this, Milton could not help but let out a sarcastic laugh, "I must be asking the obvious. You're spouses after all. There's no doubt that he knows of this good news. It will not surprise me to know that he has invested into this project personally."
Having in mind that it would be better to keep Milton away from their conflicts, Amelia had no other choice but to nod in reply.
Milton said gloomily, "Well, I'm glad to know this."
Amelia could only plaster a smile on her face.
"By the way, why had I not seen any TV broadcast making an announcement of this news? After all, this is supposed to be an enormous project for Northville."
"Speaking of this, I find it perplexing too!"
In fact, other than seeing it being published on the newspaper for only one day, she had not found any related announcement through any other media.
This was probably the reason why Patrick had not been looking for her troubles still.
She could not help but wonder if its was Sawyer's intention to prohibit the media from publishing the news.
It was not entirely impossible.
After all, Sawyer was known as a mysterious investor of Apex Construction Corporation. Having in mind that he had been on a low profile all this while, she was certain of a fact that he would not please to have media and public peeking into his privacy.
Just as Amelia was sinking in her own thought, Milton had already straightened himself before he said, "Amelia, that's all I have to tell you. I'm not going to keep you from work anymore. As I'm not sure when are we going to meet again, promise me that you're going to take care of yourself. Don't stress yourself out for work and neglect your
health."
Amelia found the sorrow in his eyes perplexing.
After all, he was in a stable relationship and he had a successful career. He had every reason to be happy and contented.
Milton threw a forceful punch at his steering wheel before he asked in frustration, "What do you want from me, Maryanne?"
"Milton, there's no point for you to stay and cling onto her. Let's return to United Kingdom, what do you think?"
"Well, fine! We will go back right away! As long as you promise that you're not going to continue harassing Amelia, I can go back with you at any time you want!"
"How about tonight?"
"What did you say?"
It was not hard to tell from his expression that he was heavy-hearted to leave. At the sight of this, Maryanne scoffed, "I won't stop you if you want to bid goodbye to her. But it can only be done through a phone call. There's no way that I'm going to let you see her face-to-face again, unless you want to break up with me."
Milton's expression darkened as he hissed, "Don't ever think of a break up!"
It was only then Maryanne flashed a victorious smile as she hummed, "I'll assume that you had just agreed to my conditions. I will book us the flight tickets by evening. Let's go back now. I still want to bid a proper goodbye to Aunt Sierra."
While Milton was driving, Maryanne had to shut her eyes as she was overwhelmed by exhaustion.
She knew that it was her character to fight until the end for whatever she wanted.
However, she was also aware that Milton was going to despise her even more.
"It's good to keep it this way."
Maryanne thought to herself.
In the evening at Apex Construction Corporation.
Staring at her injured hand, Amelia decided that she would hail a taxi home than driving on her own.
She came to the ground floor of the company. Just as she managed to stop a taxi, she caught Patrick's car approaching in her direction from the corner of her eyes.
