As she spoke, Audrey stood up from the chair, eager to prove herself to Amelia. However, her frail body shook because she exerted too much strength.
When Amelia saw her condition, she felt that even more sure that she could not let Audrey head home alone. "Okay, please listen to me and let me get someone to take you home. If something happens to you, I'll have no one else to prove my innocence, right?"
"Well, all right then." With that, Audrey became less reluctant in accepting Amelia's help.
She nodded her head. Amelia wanted to hand this matter over to Kaiden, but she then remembered how she had parted ways with him not long ago on bad terms. So, she ceased the thought and called the head of security downstairs, instructing him to send Audrey home with the company's car.
Before she left, Audrey promised, "Director Ramsay, I'll go back to get some rest first. I'll be back for work tomorrow!"
At six o'clock in the evening
At the hospital.
Amelia's schedule was packed. First, she went to George's ward to check on him. After learning from the attending physician that her father's condition was stable, she then visited the ward that Gramps Hopper was in.
At this time, Amelia was holding a stack of thickly bound medical examination reports in her hands. She stared at the blood pressure device on the bedside and muttered, thoroughly baffled, "Grandpa, this is so strange. The machine shows that all your vital signs are stable, but why isn't your blood pressure going down?"
Gramps Hopper's eyes flashed, and he snorted, "That's because you and Patrick don't visit me frequent enough! I can't sleep well, and I'm losing my appetite. Tell me how can my blood pressure go down like this!"
"Gramps..." That meant that he was not ill at all!
She swallowed back the words that were on the tip of her tongue, finally knowing why Gramps Hopper pretended to be sick and why he was excessively determined in asking his children and grandchildren to accompany him. Unless he intended to keep up this act forever, sooner or later, she would also disappear from his sight.
She had already decided that once her father
recovered, she would cut ties with the Hopper family and even Patrick. Amelia did not want to have any contact with them, so this ridiculous game of being 'siblings' with Patrick would eventually end.
As her thoughts raced in her head, she saw Gramps Hopper staring at her with utmost displeasure. "What? Are you going to tell me off?"
Amelia jolted back to her senses, her long lashes slightly fanned down when she replied deceptively, "Gramps, I'm not trying to tell you off. It's just that you've been staying in this ward all the time, not even going out for a walk. I'm just afraid you'll get bored."
Gramps Hopper took this opportunity to stretch his hand towards Amelia and shot back, "Since you say so, then you can take me to walk around the garden downstairs."
Left with no other option, Amelia secretly cursed herself for digging her own grave.
Nevertheless, she gently took Gramps Hopper's left hand, which still had strength despite being old and withered. Amelia carefully coaxed him, "Gramps, I think it'll be too hard for you to walk around the garden. What if I take you to a stroll along the corridor instead?"
Amelia bore in mind about Gramps Hopper's
accusation of her shunning him, she lowered her head and added meekly, "I'm sorry, gramps, it's not that I want to decline you, but I have to visit..."
"Your own family?"
Amelia shook her head. "No, I just came back from my father's ward."
"Oh, then I'm guessing that you'll be meeting up with Shawn Quentin." Gramps Hopper lived up to his name for being all-knowing, after all.
Amelia's eyelashes fluttered as she softly affirmed him with, "Yes."
A flash of interest grazed across Gramps Hopper's
gaze, and Amelia immediately regretted that she mentioned she had met Kayla in person. As expected, the old man pressed on right away, "So, how do you feel? Do you think she's qualified to be your sister-in-law?"
"She seems to be... younger than me?" Noticing the change in the look of Gramps Hopper's eyes, Amelia knew her answer was somewhat inappropriate and tried to cover up for herself, "Of course, age is not a problem! Ms. Elliot seems to be someone distinguished and elegant. What's more, she comes from an affluent family like Mr.
Hop...Patrick. I think they are...compatible."
The more Amelia went on, the lower the volume of her voice became. This was when she realized it was not as easy for her to talk about this topic as she had imagined, being unable to talk about her ex-husband with ease.
Gramps Hopper answered in a tone of approval as he heard Amelia's reply, "It seems that we share the same thought. I also think that Kayla, besides her family background and appearance, has a complementary personality to Patrick. You and Patrick have too prominent opposing personalities and would never give in to each other. That's why things have spiraled to this stage. I learnt my lesson and purposefully found Kayla Elliott, someone gentler. I believe the ending will be
different this time."
Threads of electric current seemed to shock Amelia's heart with every word that Gramps Hopper uttered, causing her so much pain that she wanted to cry.
Gramps Hopper could feel that Amelia was getting emotional from the way she was holding his hand. The old man frowned in silence, wondering if he had gone too far.
"Amelia, are you all right?"
Under Gramps Hopper's scrutiny, the pain that was hidden behind Amelia's gaze gradually turned into one of cold loneliness. Amelia smiled at him as if nothing had happened and replied, "I was just thinking about what you said just now. You're right, gramps. Patrick and I are destined to go against each other, and I'm afraid we can never reconcile. An early divorce is a relief for both of us."
The expression on Gramps Hopper's face froze as he heard Amelia. He parted his lips and was about to respond but then saw Amelia pulling away from his grasp. Amelia picked up her handbag behind her, stood up and greeted, "Gramps, it's getting late. I'm going to deliver food to Shawn now. I'll come back to visit you next time. Goodbye."
