It was tactless of Amelia to chat with Patrick during their nap time, which was something she would never have done in the past.
"Mrs. Hopper, I'm glad to have talked to you." What Patrick said proved that Amelia had overthought.
"Really? Don't wear yourself out," replied Amelia. She was not clingy. In fact, she was self-reliant and never took advantage of others' pamper for her to get what she needed. That was the reason Amelia kept trying to understand Patrick's true feelings.
"Yes. I have so much to tell you. A lifetime isn't long enough for me to express everything to you." Patrick lowered his head and kissed her on her forehead after that.
Amelia shut her eyes to enjoy the peck when she saw him lean forward to her.
Then, she fluttered open her eyes and looked into Patrick's, which were filled with tender affection.
Amelia breathed in gently. She was amazed that Patrick would look at her this way at last. She had always dreamed about him ever since they divorced. But in her dreams, he always shot daggers at her. Then, he would turn back to look at
Sissi with gentleness in his eyes.
Amelia's heart was racing, and she turned scarlet with embarrassment under Patrick's watchful gaze. Suddenly, she had an urge to bury her face in Patrick's chest.
"What's wrong? Why are you staring so dreamily at me?" Patrick asked in a chipper voice when he saw Amelia zoned out while looking at him.
"It's nothing..." Amelia blushed and looked away.
"I see, Mrs. Hopper. You're fascinated with my handsomeness, aren't you?" Patrick chirped.
Amelia blurted out, "It's because you're too charming!"
Patrick smiled a little wider and looked at her soulfully. "Well, Mrs. Hopper looks stunning as well. You're a classic beauty with a killer body. My eyes are stuck on you," replied Patrick.
Amelia was touched by his words and clasped her hands tightly under the quilt with embarrassment. He was too good at flirting.
Patrick looked at Amelia as she turned shy and about to hide under the quilt, so he stopped teasing her.
He then pulled the blanket down so that he could see her face. "I can't wait to remarry you after we go back to Northville. The other guys can't keep plaguing you then!" said Patrick with a trace of anger in his tone.
Amelia did not reply, so Patrick sighed and continued to say, "But, I've promised to give you some time to mull it over. Don't give yourself too much pressure."
He paused for a moment before he went on, "It's inevitable that you'll have to deal with my mom and Sawyer after you go back to Northville. You have to inform me immediately if they do something that puts you on the spot."
Amelia finally replied. She looked up at him and said, "I got it. I'll keep you posted."
Patrick then seized the chance to urge her, "Also, don't go to social events anymore. You can just call me if it's too hard for you to turn them down. I can handle them for you."
Amelia nodded again. She learned her lesson from the incident with Mr. Quade. So, she would fully rely on Patrick for his protection, the person to whom she had opened up her heart.
Patrick was delighted at her obedience, and he realized that he was finally getting closer to her!
He could not help himself from grabbing her hand under the blanket and kissing her hand repeatedly while he said brightly, "Mrs. Hopper, you're so sweet. Thank you..."
Patrick was taken aback for a brief moment, then quickly adjusted his expression. Amelia then continued, "I used to think that you treated me like an accessory in your life, which meant that you could do whatever you want with me. So, when you tried to be kind to me, I assumed you were being nosy or going against me."
"I also didn't understand why you had to control me when you loved Sissi so much."
"You would give me a dig whenever I hung around with my guy friends as if I had done something wrong to you. But, Sissi was the person whom you should care about, wasn't it?"
"These are the reasons that I refused to listen to your arrangements back then, even if what you said made sense. I thought you had no rights to order me around. After all, we were only in a sham marriage."
Amelia observed Patrick's expressions as she went on. She only continued talking when there was nothing off with his reactions.
However, she had no idea that Patrick was actually feeling depressed deep down. He knew that he had personally and gradually destroyed her trust in him.
"Then... Does that mean that I'm qualified to do that now? Since you're willing to accept my opinions now," Patrick asked as a bitter tone crept into his voice.
Qualified?
Did he mean to ask if he was qualified to become her husband?
Amelia pursed her lips and did not answer the question directly. Instead, she said tactfully, "What you said to me in the ward after the car accident was touching."
"I know what kind of person you are, so I understand how hard it is for you to confess your feelings. And when you said that you don't love Sissi, I chose to believe you."
"Patrick Hopper, I'm not cold-blooded. I remember everything that you've ever done for me. But now, I feel a little insecure. I think we need to build a little more trust before we get back together. What do you think?"
