At this moment, Florence felt as if she had just been hit by a bullet train. The conscience that she had been holding on to has just collapsed.
"Is she still my Mom that I knew of? How can she be so cruel? It's a life that she was talking about!
I wonder what had happened to Patrick..."
It was only when Eve departed from the scene outrageously that Florence finally stepped out from the shade of the tree. She wiped off her tears and rang the door bell of Land of Fragrance.
When the doorbell rang, Amelia thought that it was Eve who continued to pester her. That was why she decided that it was best to ignore it.
When she had finally done packing the clothes, it was only then she realized that it was not Eve who rang the door bell!
"Flo... Florence?" Amelia certainly did not expect Florence at the door. However, what was more shocking was that she noticed the tears on Florence's cheeks. She hushed, "What's wrong? Why are you crying?" "Amelia... I..." Florence was out of breath after some time of whimpering. Her voice was shaking as she mumbled, "Amelia... I'm so sorry... I have never thought that my mum... would be capable of doing such evil things!"
"Huh?"
Florence stopped rubbing her teary eyes. She glanced up at Amelia with her reddened eyes as she continued sobbingly, "Amelia, I've known everything that happened! It was my mum... who ordered someone else to run into you by car! Patrick was injured when he tried to save you, am I right?"
Amelia stunned for a moment before she replied sheepishly, "You've learnt everything..."
"That's right!" Florence gave her an affirmative nod. She then asked pitifully, "Amelia, how’s Patrick now?"
"His previous injury relapsed. He's now admitted to a hospital for recovery. Do you want to come along with me and pay him a visit?"
Amelia had no idea how did Florence manage to learn the truth. Supposedly Eve would hide the truth from her at all cost. Nonetheless, since Florence had known of everything, there was no need for Amelia to cover up the truth with white lies.
"Of course, I do! Let’s go now!" Before she could finish her sentence, it was at this time when Florence saw Amelia took out a packet of facial tissues from her pocket before handed it over to her.
Amelia said smilingly, "You should blow your nose first."
"Oh." As Florence took the tissues from Amelia, she was swept away by her tenderness. Amelia was still soft and thoughtful as usual even after what had happened lately.
Upon collecting herself from a puddle of mixed emotions, Florence noticed the luggage that Amelia was carrying all this while. She could not help asking, "What's this for?"
Amelia's glance fell onto the luggage before she explained, "Oh, these are Patrick's clothes for his stay at the hospital. Let's go and visit him now."
During their way to the hospital, Florence began bombarding Amelia with tons of questions. She was overwhelmed by curiosity especially in relation to the reason behind Amelia's divorce. Meanwhile, she was keen to know how Amelia was doing lately.
Amelia answered each of her questions with great patience.
Upon learning that Amelia and Patrick was about to get back together, Florence’s eyes immediately flickered with joy. However, as soon as she recalled Eve's vengeful attitude towards Amelia earlier, she could not help feeling worried of their future.
At the sight of melancholy in Florence's eyes, Amelia was aware of what she was having in her mind. She added, "Don't worry, Florence. Patrick and I were not so certain that we were meant for each other in the past. We hardly trusted each other. That was why we ended up in a divorce. However, things are different now after we've both opened up our feelings to each other. Unless any of us decide to give up, otherwise no one can ever come between us and separate us including your Mom."
It was a relief for Florence upon hearing Amelia's reassurance. However, at the same time she was swept away by a hint of sorrow when she thought of her family which had fallen apart.
"Is that true that it was because of the divorce between Patrick and Amelia?
No way."
"That's impossible!" Florence refuted agitatedly, "You’re my family too! I will be equally heartbroken if anything happens to
you!"
Well...
Amelia had to admit that she was touched to have Florence defended her as her family. However, at the same time she fell into a dilemma. After all, it was more difficult to help Florence out from her agony.
Florence cried out miserably as she felt completely lost,, "Amelia, please, you have to help me. What should I do now?"
Florence had inevitably become the middle person in the conflict between Patrick and Amelia as well as her mother. She was pondering as to whether she should have confronted Eve when she got back home.
Amelia sighed and finally said, "Florence, I can't help you with your question. After all, I had spent my entire childhood in despair and hatred. That's why I'm not in the best position to give you an unbiased answer.
What I can tell you is that hatred will eat you up alive especially when it is the dearest person of you that you're going to hate. In between your mother and your conscience, I shall leave it for you to choose on your own."
Florence was taken aback by Amelia's speech. In the next second, she grumbled dejectedly, "Amelia, you're not helping me with my question at all! I guess I'll have to wait until I see Patrick and ask him this myself!"
Amelia burst out laughing at her complaint.
She thought that perhaps it was the best solution at this moment.
After all, it was not her place to comment on what Florence decided to do in relation to her mother regardless of how close she was to Patrick. It would be best for Florence to have a word with Patrick before she decided whether to forgive her mother or not. In that case, irrespective of her decision, Amelia would have nothing to do with it.
