When Patrick saw Florence following at the back of Amelia, he could not help but raise his eyebrows. His solemn expression immediately sent a shiver down Florence's spine.
Patrick's gaze then drifted away and fell on Amelia. His questionable look seemingly asked her why Florence would be there.
"Well, Florence already knew the cause of the car accident. Don't get me wrong. It was not me who told her. Perhaps you can ask her in details later." With that said, Amelia excused herself to the washroom. She then left the ward temporarily to make space for the two siblings.
The brother and sister of the Hopper Family fell into a momentary silence as soon as Amelia left. Florence lowered her gaze and played with her fingers before she broke the silence nervously, "Patrick..."
Patrick replied friendly, "Come over and have a seat."
"Okay!" Florence immediately came forward. It was only then she noticed the gauze on Patrick's forehead. She could not help feeling sorry for him as she asked, "Patrick, what happened to your head?"
Patrick reached out to touch his forehead before he replied carelessly, "Oh, I hit my head earlier. I already had the wound stitched."
Florence exclaimed secretly, "The accident must be terrific! How could he speak as if it was not a big deal?"
She glanced at him worriedly and asked again, "Um... How's your injury? Was it serious? Is it going to make you even more retarded?"
Patrick struggled to hold back his temper. Instead of chasing her away from his ward, he asked expressionlessly, "By the way, how did you know that it was Mom who set up the accident? It couldn't be that she confessed to you all in a sudden."
Florence nodded at first before she shook her head.
Patrick narrowed his eyes at her as he demanded for an answer again, "Is that a yes or no?
It was true that she learned the truth from Eve herself. However, Eve had never intended for her to know. It was Florence who overheard the argument. Hence, she was not sure how to answer Patrick's question.
At the sight of Florence staring at him blankly, Patrick could not help but frown. He asked, "Florence, you're not here to daydream, are you?"
As she came back to her senses, Florence hurriedly said, "I'll tell you now. Since I had nothing ahead this morning, I decided to tail Mom to Land of Fragrance. Guess what happened?"
Patrick was intrigued by her question, "What happened?"
Florence grinned, "It turned out that you weren't at home! Hahaha!"
Patrick could feel the vein on his temple throbbing as he lost his patience. He hushed, "Cut to the chase!"
Florence continued, "Mom waited for you in the car while I hid behind a tree. We waited until evening for you to show up. Guess what was next?"
Patrick answered expressionlessly, "I wasn't at home still."
Glancing at him astoundingly, Florence exclaimed, "That's right! How did you know?"
Patrick uttered sternly, "Florence, I'm going to chase you out from my ward if you're here to waste my time."
"Fine. I thought you must be bored lying on the bed all day long. That was why I thought of cracking a joke to entertain you!"
Florence continued as she blinked her eyes cheekily, "After that, Amelia showed up at the door and fought with Mom. Hold on, precisely speaking, it was Mom who started the argument. At that time I was hiding behind a tree which was just a stone away from them. That was why I overheard their arguments when Mom spilt the beans of what she had done. I swear that I was completely astonished upon learning it! As soon as Mom left, I went and rang the doorbell. That was when I decided to come along with Amelia and pay you a visit!"
Patrick finally understood how Florence got to learn of what had happened.
"Karma is a b*tch... Isn't it an irony?
Mom thought of knocking Amelia to death, but it was her son who ended up in severe injury. She then went on to look for Amelia's trouble, but her daughter ended up overhearing her confession of what she had done..."
As the thought sank in Patrick's mind, he closed his eyes in an attempt to disguise his mixed emotions of sorrow and bitterness.
She thought of forgiving Eve if she were to confess to her the truth.
Unfortunately, Eve replied without hesitation, "What other reason could it be? I've been worried of your brother ever since that b*tch abandoned him. You too are aware that he has been quite down lately, aren't you? That's why I have to be concern about Patrick more."
With Eve's reply, Florence could not help but scoff in secret.
Florence proceeded to ask ambiguously, "I'm afraid that you don't even know where Patrick is, do you?"
There was no doubt that Eve had not realized the sarcasm in her question. She lied, "How's that possible? I can always call and ask him his whereabouts no matter how caught up he is."
The bright smile on Florence's face faded completely. Even so, she continued to say flatteringly, "Mom, can you ask Patrick to come back home for dinner? It has been some time since I last saw him. I really miss him."
Eve probably had not expected that Florence would make such a request. Startling, she hesitated, "Um..."
Florence asked carelessly, "What's the problem, Mom?"
Eve immediately denied, "There's no problem, dear. I remember that your Gramps' eightieth birthday is around the corner. I'll call Patrick back for dinner by then."
Florence pretended to sound as if she was bewildered, "Why must we wait until Gramps' birthday then only we can invite him for a dinner? Can't he make it for family gathering on normal days? Mom, are you having any conflicts with Patrick?"
Eve panicked, "Florence..."
Unexpectedly, Eve burst out crying all in a sudden, "Ever since Patrick's marriage broke down, he has been ignorant and distant towards me. As for Owen, he is always caught up with his duties. I only have you to rely I!
