Brittany learned from Daniel's letter that Kaleb was an overcautious man. After all, it was a psychological impact caused by George's oppression of him throughout those years. She sighed on purpose as she thought about it.
"My father has been lying on the bed for some time. He's no longer the strong and proud man that I used to know of. I remember that when I last visited him, his doctor told me that he is unlikely to wake up from unconsciousness. I'm afraid that he's going to spend the rest of his life in this condition."
Kaleb asked exasperatedly, "Brittany, are you sure?
That would no doubt be a good news for him if she was telling him the truth!
Brittany gave him a tiny nod before she started to wipe the corner of her eye sorrowfully. She murmured pitifully, "Alas, it's such a pity for me and my mother. We don't have any men to rely on anymore..."
When Kaleb heard about it, he could not help but disapprove agitatedly, "Why isn't there any? Can't you and your mother rely on me?
"You?" Brittany shook her head in disappointment before she muttered regrettably, "Forget about it. Your hesitation is enough to tell me that you have your own difficulties. I don't think that it'll be fine for you to stand up and fight for our welfares. I guess I'll have to go and ask for help from other elders in the Ramsay Family. Let me think who else is the shareholder of Apex Construction Corporation..."
Kaleb panicked upon hearing this. He hurriedly stopped her, "Brittany! You're being too impatient! I've never said that I will not help you! It's just that we'll need a detailed plan on what to do. After all, we must not forget that the Simmons Family has a say on this matter too!"
"Simmons Family?" Brittany began gloating. The document that she brought for Kaleb was in fact the photocopy version. After the meeting with Kaleb, she was going to deliver it to the Simmons Family anonymously.
At the end of the day, Simmons Family was somehow an established elite in Northville. It was impossible for them to allow Amelia to have any connections with them after learning that she was no more than an adopted orphan.
What was more, Amelia had such a bad reputation at this moment! Certainly Amelia's presence was an unwelcomed one for the Simmons Family.
At this time, Kaleb advised, "Brittany, I'm sure you know that Amelia is still holding the amount of shares that she inherited from Petty. That's why she has the most number of shares which makes her the acting director of the company now. Even if we want to chase her out of the company, we'll need the permission from the Simmons Family at least. What's more, the company has no rights to sue for conversion of those shares." Following the guidance from Daniel in his letter, Brittany said, "Petty is the daughter of the Simmons Family. After her death, supposedly her next of kin will inherit her shares. However, it is now proven that Amelia isn't her biological daughter. It is pretty argumentative for her to continue holding shares which are clearly belonged to The Simmons Family. In a moral sense, I don't think this can be justified. It's true that we can't sue for conversion, but that alone does not stop us from pressuring Amelia into stepping down from her position as an acting managing director."
When Kaleb heard Brittany's explanation, he exclaimed all in a sudden, "Oh yes!"
Brittany's face lit up with hope, "Uncle, you've found a way, haven't you?"
Overwhelmed with excitement, Kaleb replied, "Exactly! Let me call other directors over now. We can discuss this matter together!"
"Who do you want to call, uncle?"
"You'll find out in a while!" As he noticed Brittany's dubious expression, Kaleb hurriedly assured her, "Don't worry, Brittany.
They're our best allies."
Nine o'clock in the morning at the Apex Construction Corporation.
During the meeting, Amelia asked routinely, "Audrey, are we expecting anybody else?"
Upon hearing this, Audrey who was standing behind Amelia, leaned forward and whispered, "For your information, five directors applied for leave today. They are Director Ramsay, Director Luke, Director Liam, Director Cruz and Director Seth."
"Luke, Liam, Cruz and Seth..." Repeating those names after Audrey, Amelia immediately figured out the mutuality among those directors. In fact, they were all known to be pledging their loyalty on Kaleb. The fact that they did not come to work on the first day of her return to the company was more like a silent protest against her!
Amelia glanced at Audrey and ordered, "Take down those names who are absent from work today. After this meeting, let HR department know that it's my order to deduct their salary as well as this month's bonus."
"Noted."
Similarly, she did not want Brittany to have any contact with that man!
She then took a closer look at each directors appeared in the image she received. Just like Kaleb, they were all good for nothing but to create troubles. The fact that Brittany was involved in their gathering indicated that something unspeakable was going on among them.
Instead of replying to the text message, Alice called back the number, "Detective Gary, I've seen the picture that you have sent to me earlier. Is that possible for you to overhear the content of their conversation without casting their suspicion?"
"Well... I'm afraid that it'd be too late. It seems like they had come to an agreement.
They are leaving." "It's okay then. I'm sure you've done your best, Detective Gary." Alice had no other choice but to give up on pursuing their conversation. She then said, "Kindly keep a close eye on my daughter's whereabout. Report it to me as soon as you suspect any irregularities."
"No problem!"
"Mom, I'm back!"
Brittany returned home beamingly with a handful of shopping bags at noon. Alice was watching television when Brittany came back. She swept a casual glance at Brittany before she asked, "You were out early in the morning. Where have you been?"
"Mom, can’t you tell from these?" Brittany waved those shopping bags labelled with premium brand names in front of Alice.
A hint of doubt flashed across Alice's eyes unnoticeably. She asked carelessly, "That's all you did today?"
"Well, what else I could do? I don't have any real friends in Northville. If I were to ask them out, I will most probably end up drinking with them in pubs. Hence, I decided to spend some quality me time in making myself better. Who knows I will meet the right one for me any time from now? What do you think, Mom?" In fact, those words were intentionally structured in a way to please Alice.
"It's such a great relief that you can think like this." Alice spared out the seat next to her and gestured Brittany to come over and sit with her. Smiling, she said, "Come over here and show me what you've bought today."
