"Recording? Play to him?" Maryanne laughed self-deprecatingly. "That does seem like something I would do in the past."
Amelia crossed her arms around her chest and continued looking at Maryanne. "That's to say you won't do that now?"
Maryanne replied in a bad mood, "I don't earn anything from doing that. Because no matter how your words hurt me, Milton will always stand on your side."
"Why do you say that? As long as you're reasonable and not capricious, I believe that Milton will trust you," Amelia said with seriousness.
"Why?" Maryanne raised her chin, her large eyes full of confusion. "I did such a horrible thing to you, but why don't you expose me to Milton?"
"Do you want me to do that?" Amelia stared at Maryanne confusedly. Should Maryanne not beg Amelia not to say anything?
Maryanne gritted her teeth. "I'm the one asking the question!"
"Fine." Amelia nodded. "By right, I should have confessed to Milton so that he could stay away from you. But later on, I thought that it would be more interesting if Milton found out your true colours himself."
Maryanne was stunned. "What do you mean?"
"I mean, if you're a jealous and stubborn woman, you'll show your true colours to Milton one day. You can hide your true nature for a day, a month, or a year, but you can't hide it forever. And if you can hide it for a lifetime, then congratulations, because you've turned over a new leaf."
Amelia's unspoken words indicated that she was willing to give Maryanne a chance to change. But if Maryanne did not cherish it, then she would only be abandoned by Milton.
Maryanne replied with indignance, "All you're doing is sacrificing Milton's happiness! What if he discovers my true colours after marrying me? How... how can you be so selfish?"
Amelia smiled and returned, "Do you take Milton as a fool? He's clever. You've been with him for so long. If you've touched his bottomline, he would have broken up with you long ago."
"So, Maryanne, I have to say that you have my respect. It's been hard for you to suppress your true nature all this while, hasn't it? For an empty-headed, pretty face like you, you must rather die than to stay rational and elegant all the time."
"To be honest, I suddenly realized that it's not bad at all to punish you this way. Milton is your lover but also a 'prison' to you. If you want him to love you, you have to learn to restrain yourself."
"I don't think you can do anything that you would in the past right now. It's tiring being a good girl, isn't it, Maryanne?"
Amelia's words hit the nail on its head. Undoubtedly, Maryanne had tough time, even ten times harder than what Amelia had imagined.
"Amelia, sometimes I can't tell if you're a good or an evil person!"
Amelia merely shrugged. "Whatever you think. All right, I should go back to the living room. Otherwise, Milton will think that we're quarrelling."
"Wait a minute!" Maryanne reached out and grabbed Amelia's arm when she saw Amelia turning around to leave.
Amelia flung her arm to get rid of Maryanne's grip in reflex. Then, Amelia stepped back and asked warily, "What more do you want?"
"Don't get me wrong!" Maryanne raised both her hands in the air and said, "I don't mean to hurt you. I just want to apologize for pushing you down the stairs."
At this, Amelia stared at Maryanne cautiously for a moment before saying with doubt, "I remember how you much provoked me the last time we met. So, why the sudden change? Are you having some scheme up your sleeves?"
Maryanne smiled bitterly. "That's because it was all just an act."
Amelia was taken aback.
Maryanne continued, "I deliberately mocked you in front of Aunt Sierra and Milton because I didn't want Milton to suspect me."
Amelia asked back, "Then why aren't you sneering at me today? Aren't you afraid of Milton's suspicion?"
"It's because I'm tired of doing that," Maryanne returned faintly.
Tired? What did that mean?
Maryanne took a glance at Amelia, then quickly averted her gaze. Maryanne said with pretended casualness, "I've already paid a high price for what happened. I also know that I'm not worthy of Milton. I'm just his companion now, and the person he loves has always been you."
Tears welled up in Maryanne's eyes as she went on. "I'm here today to tell you that Milton loves you more than you think he does! He's willing to be with a woman he doesn't love for you. It's fine if you don't like him back, but can you please stop hurting him?"
Maryanne's words stunned Amelia, who mumbled in response, "I don't get what you mean."
"I don't know how else to say this to you." Maryanne looked down at her hands dejectedly, hesitating whether to take off the gloves and tell Amelia the truth.
But this way, Amelia and Milton would become at complete odds with each other.
At the thought of this possibility, Maryanne's hands drooped feebly. She looked a little dazed and even a little overwhelmed because she did not know how to explain what she had just said to Amelia!
Amelia played along and said, "That depends on what you and Maryanne want to eat. We have chicken, duck, and fish in the refrigerator. What do you guys what to eat?"
Then, she recalled something and added, "Oh, by the way, Mr. Hopper said that he's coming back for lunch after work."
At this, Milton was calm. However, Maryanne's heart sank.
After Maryanne came to Milton's side, she threw a discreet glance at Amelia. Then, she said to Milton with embarrassment, "Milton, I'm feeling a little uncomfortable. I want to go back first."
Then, Milton raised his hand to touch Maryanne's forehead and found that her body temperature was normal. However, she looked paler than before. In the end, Milton nodded and said, "Okay, I'll send you back."
Maryanne looked at him in surprise. "You don't have to do that. Didn't you come specially to visit Miss Amelia Ramsay?"
"Don't act tough. I'm worried about you."
He also wanted to stay and chat for a while longer, but to be honest, with Maryanne here, the topics he could talk about with Amelia were shallow. It would be better to find another opportunity to come again.
Maryanne felt warmth spreading in her heart.
"Okay. I'm sorry for spoiling your fun."
"Don't say that." Milton comforted her and smiled. Then, he turned to Amelia and said, "Amelia, I'm sorry, but we have to go back first."
Amelia shook her head and said, "It's fine. I'll see you two out."
"All right." Naturally, Milton did not reject her offer.
So, Maryanne tidied her hair and obediently followed Milton out of Amelia's house.
Just then, Patrick had returned!
"Oh?" Amelia muttered. Was it not a little earlier than usual for him to come back?
And at this time, Maryanne's expression had stiffened completely. Although Maryanne had mentally prepared herself beforehand that she might meet Patrick, she hid behind Milton when Patrick showed up.
