Audrey pondered for a moment, then she suddenly said, "Mr. Tucker, I remember you said at the meeting room that Kaleb escaped abroad after getting the company's money, right?"
Jonathan nodded. "Yes."
"But you later said that you don't know where Kaleb went. Isn't it contradictory?"
Jonathan was taken aback and said, "You're sharp!"
"I've been with Director Ramsay for a long time, so I've picked up something from her," Audrey answered modestly.
"You're right." Since he was discovered, Jonathan decided to tell Audrey the truth. "I do know where Kaleb is, but I can't tell you for now, for safety's sake."
"Why? Does Mr. Tucker think that I'll betray you?" Audrey looked at Jonathan aggrievedly.
Jonathan shook his head and replied, "No, you're still too young compared to those old shticks in the board of directors. I'm afraid that if I've told you, you'll get tricked by them and tell them the truth. So, I'd better not say anything."
"I see." Feeling relieved, Audrey then asked, "Mr. Tucker, then are were lying when you said you wanted to withdraw your shares?"
"I've told you. I'm afraid that they'll try to get information from you, so I won't tell you the details." After that, Jonathan continued, "Ms. Atkinson, I need you to do me a favour."
When Audrey left Jonathan's office, several eyes immediately fixated on her. She then managed to squeeze some tears out of her eyes in time, which made her look miserable.
The few who were looking at her could not help but reveal thoughtful expressions as they saw the scene. After that, they left to their own business.
On the other side, during Kaleb's interrogation.
Kaleb was worn out after being questioned a long day and night. But his interrogator was Owen Hopper, who was experienced in this field, which meant torture to Kaleb.
Kaleb stared at Owen with dried-out eyes as he called out dryly, "Chief Hopper! Officer Hopper! I've confessed everything yesterday. What else do you want to ask me?"
Owen sat on a chair that separated him from Kaleb by metal railings. Through the bars, Owen asked coldly, "Kaleb Ramsay, I'll give you another chance. Does Yancie's disappearance have anything to do with you?"
Kaleb shook his head like a rattle.
After that, Owen grabbed the USB and the recording pen on the table. He waved them in front of Kaleb and said, "How do you explain these two then? Don't tell me that the blurred-out woman in the video isn't Yancie. I'm not a fool."
Kaleb, who had already been forced to look at the video and the recording, answered, "Yancie Cabeza is, indeed, my mistress. But I'm not sure if she's the same person as the missing Yancie in the newspaper!"
Owen immediately picked up a piece of paper and asked his subordinate to hand it to Kaleb. "This is the information given to us by the owner who rented the house to Yancie. Check if the basic information fits with your mistress, Yancie Cabeza."
Kaleb received it then looked at it. "Apart from the gender, nothing matches! Officer Hopper, you must have made a mistake."
"Really?" Owen then crossed his arms over his chest as he stared at Kaleb calmly. "As far as we know, you once gave Yancie a bank card worth 4 million USD. But she did not withdraw a penny from the bank card and disappeared. Not long after, you showed up at the bank with that same bank card and transferred the money into the accounts of your so-called 'neutral parties' in the company. I'm not wrong about this, am I?"
Kaleb's cheeks shuddered at that. "Officer Hopper, a bank card can't prove that Yancie's disappearance has anything to do with me, can it?"
Owen narrowed his eyes. "Didn't you say that you weren't sure if your mistress and the missing Yancie in the newspaper are the same person? Are you admitting that your mistress is missing now?"
"Oh no!" cursed Kaleb deep down. Kaleb had made a slip of his tongue!
After giving a few vague mumbles as responses, Kaleb ground his teeth and denied. "Officer Hopper, I don't know anything about Yancie. I broke up with her!"
"Then explain to me why the bank card that should have been with Yancie is now in your hands."
Kaleb could not answer.
At noon, at Land of Fragrance.
As usual, Patrick went home to have lunch with Amelia after work.
Though Amelia was happy, she still felt apologetic for Patrick to rush back and forth.
After Amelia handed Patrick a bowl of chilled pumpkin soup, she said, "Mr. Hopper, why don't you eat lunch at the company? Look at you. You sweat a lot every time you come back."
Patrick took the bowl of soup and said, "It's all right. I like to come back to accompany you."
No matter how sunny it was, he would be satisfied as long as he saw Amelia and the baby in her belly.
Amelia could not persuade him, so she said, "Then you need to drink more water. The chilled pumpkin soup can keep you cool, so you have to finish it."
Patrick nodded and expressed, "By the way, Amy, Jonathan called me today and told me about a purge plan at Apex Construction Corporation. I think it's not bad. Do you like to hear it?"
Amelia felt bemused and said, "Uncle Tucker tells you everything now."
"Aunt Alice!" After Amelia greeted Alice, Amelia leaned over to George's ear and told him about the matters at Apex Construction Corporation. When she mentioned Kaleb's misappropriation of the company's funds and escape, George's mouth twitched in a frenzy. It was miserable because he looked like he wanted to speak up but could not.
Amelia quickly raised her hand to stroke her dad's chest and comforted him, "Dad, don't get so agitated. He's arrested and the money is returned. Mr. Hopper's eldest brother is interrogating him in the bureau. It's over for Kaleb."
George gradually calmed down as he heard this. The heaving in his chest slowed down and his eyes became gentle too.
Amelia then immediately told him about Jonathan's purge plan and observed his reaction.
This time, George did not react overly. He merely blinked his eyes as if he agreed with the plan.
"Dad, it's great that you can understand all of this! But once many of the directors withdraw their shares, the company's scale and expenditure will drastically reduce. It's estimated that the staff's salary will also become a problem..."
When Amelia got to this point, she grabbed George's hand and put it on her cheek. After that, she said softly, "But Dad, compared with the depravity in the mind, these problems are nothing. I'm glad that the senior management in Apex
Construction Corporation is finally being reformed."
George's lips curled upwards gently as if praising Amelia in silence.
Alice nodded and chimed in, "Amelia, just let Jonathan carry on the plan with no worry. Now, Apex Construction Corporation is no longer afraid of any trouble."
"Yes, Apex Construction Corporation has experienced many difficulties and vicissitudes. What's there to be afraid of?" Amelia thought.
Alice then asked, "By the way, how's your wedding going on? Is there anything I can help you with?"
George could not help but widened his eyes from excitement.
"Uh..." Amelia shot a glance at Patrick.
Patrick replied, "The wedding is in preparation. Aunt Alice, there's nothing for you to worry about. When the time comes, all we need is for you and Dad to attend our wedding."
"That's for sure!" Alice expressed without thinking. "Although George is unable to move freely, I've already discussed with the doctor. I'll use a wheelchair to bring him to the wedding. The doctor will come with me in case of emergencies."
Amelia exclaimed with delight, "That's great!"
"As for Brittany..." Alice's smile then faded a little. "I won't bring her along. She's too capricious. I'm afraid that she'll cause you trouble."
