"Maryanne, what took you so long?"
"Er..."
Maryanne was just about to answer when the newly hired driver said, "Sir, when we were about to come back, there was a man who kept pestering Miss!"
"What? Who is it?" Hobart was instantly on guard.
Maryanne quickly stood in front of the car window to block Hobart's sight. She turned around and whispered to the driver, "Stop talking..."
"Maryanne!" Of course Hobart would not be fooled by her. With the authority as an elder brother, he glared at her, "If you don't explain to me clearly, you can forget about going out in the future."
"Hobart!" Maryanne bit her lower lip. Just as she was about to say something, the driver's voice rang out from behind her. "Sir, that man claimed to be the miss's boyfriend. I said that the her boyfriend died in a car accident, but he asked me to convey his message to you. That not only is he healthily alive, but he will also be with miss for a hundred years."
Maryanne became speechless.
"Great, absolutely great!" Hobart's face was ashen with rage. He grabbed Maryanne's wrist and pulled her in front of him. "When you told me that it was a class reunion, I was still very happy for you. I thought that you were finally willing to open your heart. But it seems that you're still as foolish as you were in the past!"
Maryanne, who was shocked, tried to explain, "Hobart, I can explain..."
However, Hobart had already guessed who the person who claimed to be her "boyfriend" was. How would he still listen to her excuse?
Hobart was greatly enraged at the thought of his beloved sister deceiving him for the b*stard. "You even lied to be going to a class reunion just to meet him. Are you bewitched? What if he does something bad to you again, have you thought about the feelings of your family?!"
Meeting the anger and fear on his face, Maryanne could not help but had her eyes turned red.
She certainly knew how much her brother and parents cared about her, especially Hobart. During the time, he had cherished her wholeheartedly, afraid that she would face any harm. So the reason why he got so angry was that she had done something disappointing for him.
She could not help but hold his hand and shook it, like how she had asked for candies when she was a child. "Hobart, the person I went to see was Aunt Sierra. Before I went, I even called her and asked her about it. Only after making sure that Milton was not there that I've gone. I didn't expect to see him when I was leaving. I tried my best to get rid of him! Really, please believe me."
The fury in Hobart's heart was mostly eased as he saw the tears welling up in her eyes. "Alright, stop crying! I haven't done anything to you yet you're already crying like this. If the neighbours happen to see it, they'll say I'm bullying you!"
Hobart was a little displeased at this point. She had been willing to face any trouble while being with Milton. Yet she was crying when he had just lectured her slightly, being absolutely a good-for-nothing!
"Hobart, I was wrong..." Maryanne lowered her head and said pitifully, "Don't ignore me."
"I'd rather ignore you, but dad and mom would definitely whack my *ss!" Hobart muttered to himself, but he grabbed hold of Maryanne's shoulder and said softly, "That's enough. Let's go home for dinner. I've waited for you so long that the food has turned cold..."
Maryanne felt even more apologetic. "I'm sorry."
"Alright, it's nothing." Hobart comforted her.
The next moment, he realized that he had not been firm enough. He thought for a moment and reasoned, "Don't contact the Cook's ever again, including the Aunt Sierra you said. Who knows if she will persuade you to get back together with her son!"
Maryanne explained as she walked with him to the house, "Aunt Sierra still doesn't know what's going on between him and me."
"Do you simply believe her words?" Hobart pursed his lips. "It's might all be a new conspiracy of Patrick and the Cook's!"
Maryanne opened her mouth, but in fear of making Hobart unhappy again, she shut up.
After entering the house, Hobart let Maryanne go to the bathroom while he ordered the servants to heat up the food.
By the time Maryanne came out of the bathroom, the food had been served again on the table, piping hot.
Hobart pulled the chair for Maryanne and said, "Maryanne, after dinner, I'll take you to a cosmetic plastic surgery hospital where there is an outstanding medical team."
Maryanne was stunned and asked in a low voice, "Again?" "Why not?" His gaze landed on her slightly resistant face, and he earnestly said, "Maryanne, as long as there is a glimmer of hope for your hand to recover, we shall not give up."
Maryanne said dejectedly, "But we've been to three hospitals in the past month or so, and the results are all very disappointing..."
Hobart said encouragingly for her, "So what? There are countless hospitals in the world. We've just visited three while there's still many left! Maryanne, you still have a long way to go. I don't want to see you wearing gloves all your life."
His words had messed up Maryanne's heart. Even she herself did not know why she was so lax about the recovery treatment. Perhaps she was already used to wearing gloves? Or perhaps she subconsciously did not want to get rid of the ties with Milton? No one actually knew...
Noticing her in a daze, Hobart sighed and asked patiently, "Maryanne, what do you think?"
Maryanne looked down a little guiltily when their eyes met. She mumbled,"... Okay."
At The Ramsay's residence.
Just as Alice was absent-mindedly eating dinner, a maid suddenly walked over and said, "Madam, there's a guest looking for you at the door."
"Our company?" Alice was silent for a while. Then she turned to Jonathan's information and asked, "Didn't you leave as well?"
"My information is just a cover-up to deceive other directors. I would be reluctant to part!" Jonathan smiled.
Alice was moved, but she still persuaded, "After so many staff left and so much funds were withdrawn, the operation of Apex Construction Corporation should be in trouble now. With the government holding us account later, we'll soon suffer from bankruptcy. Mr. Tucker, I know the friendship between you and George. But with your qualifications, you could totally make way after leaving the Apex Construction Corporation."
Every company would more or less have some omissions. Tax evasion was one of them that would surely be targeted by the government. Not to mention that the Apex Construction Corporation had already offended the government during the Easthern District project. While Kaleb was caught red handed, followed by the exposure of his various scandals and murder case of mistress, it was certain that the government would investigate the company.
Jonathan shook his head. "I won't leave unless the company really goes bankrupt. The company is currently in need of manpower."
Alice then no longer tried to persuade him since he persisted.
In fact, she had selfish motives as well. Since Jonathan was willing to stay and support the company as a founding member, she and George would then have less trouble.
"By the way, what's going on with Director Ramsay? I don't believe the rumors about her going crazy. This is absolutely nonsense!" Jonathan asked.
"... I'm sorry. About this matter, I have promised Gramps Hopper that I would keep it a secret. I can only say that Amelia is also one of the victims, she..."
Speaking of it, Alice choked with sobs.
After offing herself to Jonathan, she hurriedly got up and went to the bathroom.
After a long while, she finally returned with her eyes red.
And Jonathan did not know whether or not to continue asking about the matter.
"I'm sorry..." Alice apologized for her loss of composure. "In the past month, I would lose control whenever I think of Amelia. She should have become a bride being admired by all, but now..."
Alice refrained herself from saying the words " nowhere to be found" in time. She wiped her teary eyes and changed the subject. "I've never been involved in the matters of the company. So it's been hard on you, Mr. Tucker."
"Don't say that. I'm just doing what I can." Jonathan was acting humble, but his heart was in turmoil because of Alice's words.
What on earth had happened to Amelia? Why would Alice cry the moment she mentioned about her? She had even said things like " promise to keep it a secret" and "Amelia was one of the victims", which made him more confused.
However, judging from Alice's attitude, he could only bid farewell while in confusion. "Madam, if there's nothing else, I'll leave ahead."
