Heath wasn’t talking about the internet onlookers. He was referring to the people in their social circle.

Veronica jerked her wrist away in disgust. She sharply said, Mr. Tate, do you need me to remind you that your marriage is a secret? If you’re really so worried about becoming a laughingstock, then divorce me while I’m still willing to walk away without putting up a fight!

She was burning with rage.

Heath’s words had thrown her mind into chaos. She was anxious about Jocelyn, desperate to leave.

Yet, he had to pick this exact moment to provoke her. So, she wasn’t going to hold back.

Heath’s eyes lingered on Veronica’s flushed, animated face, thinking that she must have been eating well lately. Her cheeks had filled out slightly, lending her a gentler, more delicate appearance than before.

Over the six years of their marriage, Veronica had always been the dutiful, goodtempered wife. She was quiet, accommodating, and never once raised her voice to him.

Now, she was the complete opposite.

But even in this sharp, angry state, he couldn’t look away.

The faint scar at the corner of her eye was almost gone now, but it still reminded him of the day he had found her lying in a pool of blood.

He couldn’t help but wonder if things would have turned out differently if he had stepped in earlier to stop the kids that day.

He instinctively reached out to brush the mark, and Veronica slapped his hand away without hesitation.

He frowned.

Miriam stood between them, watching with wideeyes, completely absorbed. Walter, take Miriam to the hall first,Heath said, tapping on the car window.

Walter immediately stepped out of the car and led Miriam away.

As he walked away, he sneaked another look at Veronica. His thoughts were a whirlwind.

Even after everything that had happened, Heath still showed no signs of wanting to divorce her. Still, Walter thought that this would’ve been the perfect opportunity to do so.

He pushed the thought aside and quickly led Miriam away.

Grandpa’s birthday is next month. Come back to Shalton with me,Heath said, ignoring her earlier demand.

Veronica didn’t refuse outright. Instead, she replied, I’ll go, but on behalf of my grandfather,

not as Mrs. Tate.

Heath’s jaw clenched at how firmly she drew the line between them. He questioned, Do you have to be like this?

She tilted her head, smiling faintly. What do you mean, Mr. Tate? It’s the perfect opportunity for you to bring your beloved Eleanor with you and introduce her to all your family and

friends.

Oh, and once we’re divorced, she won’t be a mistress anymore. Your relationship will no longer carry the stain of an affair.

Veronica!he snapped, clearly provoked. How many times do I have to tell you? Eleanor and I are not what you think.

Oh, really? I thought you two were some kind of tragic, starcrossed lovers whose bond was stronger than gold. It turns out you’re just a coward, Mr. Tate.Veronica lifted her delicate chin, a soft, mocking laugh rising in her throat.

Heath yanked off his tie, his expression cold. You’ve got a sharp tongue, I’ll give you that. Since you’re so obsessed with defining things, Mrs. Tate, how about we define our marital status right here and now?

Veronica instantly sensed danger and took a step back. Heath, what are you doing?”
