“What do you mean by that, Mom?” Miriam asked, her lips trembling. She suddenly thought of the young girl her mother had held that day in the apartment.

Clearly, her mom liked that girl better!

Veronica bent down and gently pulled Miriam’s cheek, just like she used to.

Miriam didn’t flinch, but her eyes lit up. A flicker of glee and a hint of smugness flashed in her eyes. She felt like she’d caught Veronica red–handed.

Her mother was obviously here to secretly see her and Heath, but still refused to admit to it!

But a moment later, Veronica’s soft yet cruel voice drifted into her ear. “I mean, I can tell the difference between gold and poop.”

Then, she smoothly took the laser pointer from Miriam’s hand.

With a click, the sharp red beam swept across both the father’s and daughter’s faces.

The child was on the verge of tears, and the older man looked as though he was about to implode.

Veronica’s lips curled ever so slightly.

Before Heath could do anything, she tossed the laser pointer into the trash can. Then, she turned on her heel and headed toward the elevator.

Suddenly, a force yanked at her from behind.

“Mom! You’re not allowed to bully Ms. Turner anymore!” Miriam rushed forward and grabbed her arm using all her strength.

Not long ago, Miriam had received a phone call from Eleanor. She could tell right away from her voice that something was wrong. Eleanor was clearly upset.

So, she had begged Heath to bring her to the awards ceremony that night.

Miriam thought that if Veronica wasn’t here to stalk her and Heath, then she had to be here to cause trouble!

Míriam had seen Eleanor cry in secret more than once after seeing Veronica. As such, she felt that she couldn’t let this continue.

Veronica raised a brow, amused. “That’s a bold aim. When did you see me bullying her? Kid, do you even know what you’re saying?”

Miriam flushed red with embarrassment. She wanted to say that it was just her gut feeling, but that would only play right into Veronica’s hands.

“You’re being ridiculous, Mom!” She huffed in frustration.

Veronica opened her mouth to fire back.

However, Heath spoke up first. “That’s enough. She’s just a child.”

He’d been keeping an eye on Veronica’s activity at Jocelyn’s studio lately. Seeing her run around for someone who had nothing to do with her left a bitter taste in his mouth.

“Jocelyn has a boyfriend. You’re going through all this trouble for nothing,” he said, displeased.

“Well, what can I say? All men are useless,” she retorted.

Heath’s expression darkened as he pulled Miriam away from her side.

“Jocelyn’s still a rookie. Do you really think cozying up to her will help you break into the fashion world?”

Veronica rolled her eyes at his condescending tone and snapped, “And?”
