Of course she knew about Shadow Core.
It was the top-tier security firm in the country, and the two bodyguards at her side? Straight from their ranks. Everyone in their world knew what Shadow Core was really like: professional, dangerous, and not a place for the faint of heart. Total wolf den. People joked that even a female mosquito wouldn’t survive in there, so a delicate woman like Evelina? She wouldn’t stand a chance.
Emmy sucked in a sharp breath.
Mr. Nelson wasn’t someone to mess with.
Honestly, though, Evelina had brought this on herself. Of all the people to target, why try to play games with Mr. Nelson? She deserved whatever came next.
The thought made Emmy’s heart flicker with a dark satisfaction, but her face stayed calm and distant. “Doesn’t she have a powerful mother? With Claudia’s connections, why would she need my help?”
Juan’s face got even grayer. “If Ms. White could get her out, do you think I’d be here?”
Emmy’s lips twisted into a cold little smile. “If Ms. White can’t do it, what about Dean? Didn’t he try breaking in with his men?”
Juan stared at her, shocked. “You know about that?”
He lowered his voice, urgency in every word.
“Then you must know Shadow Core is Mr. Nelson’s turf! Any woman who tries to seduce him ends up in there! Even the Aldridge family’s heiress—yeah, the most powerful family in Oakridge—got tossed in once. The whole family pulled every string, crashed in with a rescue team, and it still took three days to get her out!”
“When she finally made it out, she’d lost her mind. She hasn’t been right since.”
A cold shiver crept up Emmy’s spine.
She realized just how lucky she’d been. If “seduction” was the crime, she’d accidentally done it to Mr. Nelson more than once. She didn’t even want to imagine what would happen if he ever decided to throw her into Shadow Core.
All the color drained from her cheeks.
Juan saw her reaction and thought she was finally scared. He pressed harder.
“Dean tried to break in, but those Shadow Core guys—they’d take on the military if they had to. Dean’s people didn’t stand a chance!”
“Emmy, you’re the only one who can talk to Mr. Nelson. Please, just ask him for Evelina’s sake. Maybe if it’s you, he’ll let her go.”
