Mr. Nelson. Jamie.
The man who could turn the tides of the city’s business world with a single move. Cold, distant, impossibly restrained—he was practically a legend. But one Jamie was a fearless hero, risking his life in fire after fire. The other was a sharp, decisive heir, ruling the world of wealth and power. How could they both be him? It just didn’t make sense.
Emmy shook her head, trying to chase away the crazy idea, but her heart wouldn’t stop racing.
Abriella blinked. “No, of course not.” She sounded so matter-of-fact. “Didn’t he tell you? He was in the Special Forces.”
Emmy stared at her, stunned. “Special Forces? Since when does that pay enough to buy two luxury condos in South Bay?”
Abriella grinned. “You have no idea. Before he retired, the unit he was in was the country’s most elite, most secretive. They did the impossible, the stuff no one else would even touch. For a few years, he was always on the edge, breaking records nobody else has come close to. Between the bonuses and government payouts, he did pretty well for himself.”
She shrugged, as if it was just everyday news. “After he retired, things cooled off. But even now, his salary and bonuses are more than decent.”
Every word Abriella said was true.
Every cent James spent now, he’d earned the hard way—risking his life.
Steve had once confided in her that James kept his two lives completely separate. Every time he stepped into the role of Mr. Nelson, it was like he was trying to make up for something—paying penance, somehow. He was convinced, deep down, that his brother’s death was his fault.
So after he left the military, he gave half his life to his brother’s legacy, holding down the fort at Nelson Corporation. But he never touched a dime he made from the company. Every bit went back into the business or was donated to charity under his brother’s name.
That was how Nelson Corporation managed to stay on top, even after everything that happened.
Abriella sometimes wondered—if her cousin could have fallen for a woman, maybe he would have married his brother’s sweetheart, just to fulfill his brother’s dream. At least when it came to love, James knew his own mind. The family couldn’t force his hand.
But all those messy family secrets—Abriella kept them to herself, at least for now.
Still, even this simple explanation was enough to shake Emmy to her core.
