Emmy’s question landed a little too hard.
Ben’s face tightened right in front of her. He frowned, his voice turning serious. “I told you. No one asked me to come. I came because I wanted to.”
The cold curl of a smile formed on Emmy’s lips.
“Uncle Ben, whoever talked you into coming here to play mediator…” She paused, letting every word sink in. “I just hope you can be rational about this.”
“There’s no way I’m getting back together with him. Not ever.”
She didn’t wait for a reply. Emmy grabbed her bag and walked out without looking back.
Outside, she slipped into the busy crowd, but her thoughts were all over the place. Judging by the look on Mr. Sparrow’s face, it really didn’t seem like Dean had sent him. Dean was way too proud for that. He’d never send someone to beg for him. If anything, he’d just try to force her hand, push her until she gave in.
So who was behind this? Who actually wanted her and Dean back together?
Emmy replayed the whole conversation in her mind, searching for any clues, but she came up empty. With a sigh, she decided to let it go for now and went to find her bodyguard and Ollie.
They were about to leave when something popped into her head. She changed direction on a whim, taking Ollie by the hand and heading into a men’s clothing store.
She picked out two sets of soft, casual clothes for James. Deep down, Emmy knew she’d never love James with the wild, reckless passion she’d once felt for Dean. But she could fake it. She could act like she was head-over-heels.
After everything she’d been through, she’d learned her lesson. She’d never let herself fall so hard again. She always kept some part of herself guarded, never losing herself for anyone or anything. That was the only way to avoid repeating her old mistakes.
When she finished shopping, Emmy checked the time and took Ollie to the hospital.
The moment Teresa saw little Ollie with his rosy cheeks and big eyes, she practically lit up with joy. She couldn’t stop smiling at him. Since Krystina wasn’t there yet, Emmy was happy Ollie could spend some extra time with her mom.
The hospital room was quiet. Emmy sat nearby, reading her book, while Ollie knelt at Teresa’s side, drawing in his coloring book.
Teresa gently ran her fingers through Ollie’s hair and sighed. “If only I had a little grandson like this. He’s just too sweet.”
