Surprise?
Emmy almost laughed, but it came out cold and bitter inside. She didn’t need surprises someone else planned for her.
James and Abriella keeping things from her was just the tip of the iceberg. What really got to her was the feeling that she couldn’t control her own life anymore. She’d worked so hard to build her career after getting a second chance at life, thinking she could finally steer her own fate. But then these two kids showed up—totally unexpected—and suddenly all her careful plans were out the window.
She felt like a puppet, strings pulled by someone else no matter how much she tried to cut them. She didn’t want to revolve her life around a man or a family again. She didn’t want to lose herself.
Sometimes, it was hard to even breathe.
Emmy looked up at Ivy, her eyes a little lost. “Ivy, you’ve spent your whole life with the Drennon family. You took care of me, even when you had to put your own kids second. Do you ever… regret it?”
Ivy’s kids were older than Emmy. She’d started working at the old Moonlight Bay estate when she was young. Even when she got pregnant, she only took a year off before rushing back to work.
In the end, wasn’t that just devoting your life to someone else’s family?
But Ivy just paused, then gave her a gentle smile.
“Regret? Oh honey, not at all.”
Her voice was warm and honest. “Joining the Drennon family was the best thing that ever happened to me. They treated us well and paid us fairly. Because of them, I found a good husband and could send my kids to school so they could make it in the city.”
Ivy smiled, a little embarrassed, then looked at Emmy with so much love in her eyes.
