Emmy’s heart jumped, and she found herself looking away without even thinking about it.
“Did I?” she said, trying to sound casual.
She picked up her water glass and took a sip, but her voice wavered just enough to give her away.
“I was just asking, no big deal.”
Abriella clearly wasn’t buying it. She leaned in closer, so close their noses almost touched, her gaze sharp and full of suspicion.
Emmy, feeling cornered, decided to turn it back on her. Her eyes narrowed playfully. “Are you sure you’re not the one keeping secrets from me?”
“What secrets?” Abriella shot back instantly.
Whatever she remembered must have made her panic, because she suddenly bounced up from the couch and stretched with an exaggerated yawn.
“Ugh, I’m seriously wiped. Didn’t even get to bed until after two.”
“I’m heading home to crash. You should get some rest too!”
Before Emmy could say anything else, Abriella was already halfway to the door, moving fast and not looking back.
Emmy glared at her retreating back and called out, “Abriella!”
All she got in return was a loud slam as the door shut behind her.
If that wasn’t the most suspicious exit in the world, Emmy didn’t know what was.
She let out a laugh despite herself. Somehow, Abriella’s terrible acting made her annoyance fade a little.
With a sigh, Emmy sank back into the sofa, her head spinning with a mess of thoughts.
But the day had worn her out, and before she knew it, her eyelids were heavy and she drifted off right there.
A while later, Ivy came out of her room with a thin blanket. She quietly covered Emmy, then glanced at the clock on the wall.
It was already ten. Why wasn’t Mr. Hamilton home yet?
She couldn’t help worrying a little.
…
James finally walked through the door at one in the morning.
Ever since he’d gotten back to the city, work had been endless. He barely had time to keep up with everything at the office, let alone his team.
He hadn’t even texted Emmy.
Not that she’d messaged him, either.
The uneasy feeling in his chest only faded when he saw Emmy sleeping on the couch.
