Kai's POV
I drove through the night, pushing the powerful car to its limits, the engine a low growl that matched the mood of my own wolf. We were finally heading back to our own territory. The city lights were a distant glow on the horizon.
Jax sat in the passenger seat, silent for most of the journey, letting me process the events of the evening. He was smart enough to know when to speak and when to let the silence do the work. He watched the dark trees flash by, giving me space.
My mind was replaying the entire night. Her defiance. Her cold, precise intelligence. The flicker of annoyance in her eyes when I tested her. The way she ignored me at dinner, focusing on her food with an intensity that was more insulting than any argument could ever be.
I had gone there expecting a boring political maneuver and a plastic doll of a mate. I had found a queen instead. A queen who didn't know her own power, a queen who didn't want a crown.
Finally, as we left the Silver Crown mountains behind and the city lights grew closer, Jax broke the silence.
"So... that was unexpected," he said, his voice cautious. He knew my temper was on a knife's edge. "The lost heir. A healer. Who would have thought?"
He shifted in his seat, turning to face me. "What's the plan, Alpha? Politically, this changes things. She's defiant. She won't be an easy Luna to manage for the pack."
"Are we finding a way to break the contract?" he asked, getting to the heart of the matter.
