Chapter 115
As soon as she answered, a furious voice exploded on the other end. “Emma, did you call the police? Why would you do that? What were you thinking?”
So, they’ve finally tracked her down.
While the person on the line was practically seething, Emma remained perfectly calm.
“Ms. Bennett? They’re ready for you now,” the nurse called from the doorway.
Emma smiled politely, ended the call, and said, “Thank you, I’m coming.”
Almost immediately, her phone started buzzing again, but she ignored it and followed the nurse into the examination room.
Throughout her treatment, the phone kept vibrating nonstop.
“Is that your phone? Do you need to take the call?” Dr. Fletcher asked, glancing at her.
She shook her head. “No, it’s fine. Probably just a spam call.”
And honestly, that wasn’t far from the truth.
Eventually, after several unanswered calls, the phone finally fell silent.
Once her treatment was finished and Dr. Fletcher had removed the last needle, he asked, “Have you seen the gynecologist yet?”
Emma understood right away–Theodore must have asked him about it. Dr. Fletcher probably thought she was here for that, too. Clearly, he hadn’t left his office today and didn’t know who had actually come in.
She just smiled. “No, I don’t think I’ll bother.”
There was no need to lay all her wounds out for the world to see.
Dr. Fletcher nodded. “Honestly, if both of you are healthy, there’s no reason to rush. You’re still young.”
She smiled, grateful. “Thank you, Dr. Fletcher. What time should I come tomorrow?” She’d just rescheduled her visa interview for the morning, but wasn’t sure if the afternoon would work.
“Anytime. I’ll be here all day tomorrow,” he replied.
Perfect. She could do her visa appointment first, treat herself to lunch somewhere nice, and then come back here for her therapy.

Dr. Fletcher added, “I’ve got a set of rehab exercises for you to try. Based on your progress with the acupuncture, I think you’re ready. My mentor actually designed these himself–they’re still pretty new, not many people have tried them yet. You’d be something of a pioneer.”
He gave her a playful smile. “Which means, technically, you might be my guinea pig for this protocol.”
“I really don’t mind!” Emma meant it. Whether her legs ever healed or not, she was willing to try anything. She’d already made her peace with it–being a case study for a doctor’s research wasn’t the worst thing that could happen.
“Great, I’ll send you the video in a bit. For now, the nurse will take you to the rehab room so you can give it a try.”
“Sounds good!” Emma grabbed her bag and followed the nurse out, never once checking her phone.
The rehab session was grueling and exhausting. But because she’d studied dance–even if those days were five years behind her–her body still remembered some of the old flexibility, and somehow, she managed to get through it.
Even the nurse was surprised. “You’re the first patient who’s ever finished the entire set on the first try,” she said, but Emma could tell she also knew how hard it had been. Her rehab clothes were soaked through with sweat.
“That was rough. Would you like me to help you change?” the nurse offered kindly.
Emma felt like she’d been dipped in water, every inch of her saturated. She shook her head–she just needed a moment to rest. Her body felt like it might come apart, and her legs were completely useless.
“All right, just press the call button if you need help getting changed later,” the nurse said before heading off.
Emma nodded, out of breath. She’d intended to sit on the bench, but her legs gave out under her, and she slid right onto the floor.
She tried to push herself back up, bracing her hands on the seat, but her arms were shaking so badly she couldn’t manage it.
She let out a soft laugh. Well, this was fine. Sitting on the floor was as good a place
as any,
She closed her eyes, letting her muscles relax, and waited for her strength to return.

Suddenly, someone burst in, all bluster and barely–contained anger. “Why haven’t you been answering your phone?”
